wierd phone calls

The land line phone of the house keeps getting wierd phone calls, like it rings, and when it is answered the person on the other end just hangs up, also we are getting a fair few ''wrong numbers'' (yeh right
). Its happened at least 10 times since monday and it has never happened before as such, and Im getting pissed with it..

I read that this might be caused by telephone sales, ie the computer dials lots of numbers till it gets a reply.. but if the phone operator (seller) is talking to someone else at that time the computer just drops the call

Said it before and I'll say it again- anyone calls your number and you don't like it- very loud whistle down the phone leaves them with tinnitus for a while- in the case of telesales-jerks hopefully it's a permanant thing.

Me & the missus have a similar problem at our house - some guy keeps calling, he must think we are the met office, when you answer the phone the bloke says " is the coast clear ?"

Phone BT and get yourself on the telephone preference service, then your number is not given to telesales companies and if they phone you cold you just tell them you are on TPS and they will not bother you again,

You should be able to get BT to set up your line so no-one can call you unless they declare their number. C&W did that with ours when we had a similar problem. Downside is, when a company legitimately need to call you they usually can't as most withold their numbers. Should be able to switch it on & off with certain codes (eg hash 8 hash). We leave it on and 1471 anyone who tries to be silly, calling them back and asking for an explanation.

I have exactly the same thing happening at the moment, but I'm pretty sure from a few telecoms contacts that I know what it is.
We think it's a foreign call centre doing several numbers at the same time, first to answer gets connected others ring out or disconnected on answer. I never answer quickly as I'm always a way from the phone hence I never get connected.
My line is set to refuse witheld numbers, but these still get through as there is a difference between 'withheld' and 'not available' so I still can't use 1471 - makes me mad as hell that I can't ring them back and give them a good tongue lashing.
