TCR vs Scalextric

I had TCR for approximately 6 hours on Christmas day when I was a kid before it stopped working and my dad took it back and swapped it for Scalextric. I still remember it now and scalextric was never as good as TCR. Heard they had loads of problems with TCR but have always wanted one since (for my son obviously ). Have seen them on ebay but havent bought one thinking it would be just as disastrous as my first one
Hmmm now wondering whether to chance it off ebay and get one for Christmas

How odd, i was only thinking about TCR a week or so ago, i had a set back in about '78, got it for christmas i recon. It looked anftastic and cars that changed lanes!
TCR - Total Control Racing i seem to remember.
It worked for a while but the tyres and the brass pick-up's wore out very quickly and where a bugger to find in the shops.
When it worked it was grrrrrrrreat but that was not that often or for long either.
Fab idea and nearly a winner.
Does anyone remember 'Flightdeck' i think thats what it was called, set up on the stairs and was a land the plane on the carrier deck game, Looked great but was cr@p in practice, plane guided on a piece of string via a joystick.

Even though i'm 34 it still comes out when you got some mates round and everyone's canned up.
My son's got a Scalextric with the scoob & the evo as well all good fun.

Sammy.
There are several on Ebay, but most say mots (assume moters) need overhaul. Tyres will be an issue, they where slightly conical in design and i doubt if you could get hold on them any more.

Thats the thing, why are they for sale on ebay? Cos they don't work? Especially when the advert says its sold untested As it seems everyone else had problems with theirs it hardly seems much point buying a set off of ebay, especially when one of them is £80 and you know its going to last less than a day and thats if it actually works when you plug it in when you get home.
With how much technology has advanced since TCR came out I can not understand why it has never been developed into a more reliable competitior to scalextric The whole enjoyment and thrill for me was that the cars werent fixed to a rail and you could overtake. To me thats infinately better than scalextric.

Yep I agree its about time we had something with lane changes that work! I've been looking at TCR sets on ebay and got tempted but I know that
A its not going to work so i'll buy more till it does
B I'll get bored with it
C The misses will kill me.
Might keep an eye out and get one and keep it in work though

I had loadsa TCR. Had the original truck racing game, then remember being bought lots of extra track when it was all being cleared after its went bust, then bought at least as much again for 50p from a car-boot. I must have been about 10 and its prob my best bargain ever (before or since!).
Eventually ended up with enough of those tiny springs to run about one car.
Less frustrating than Scalextric beacuse you didnt fly off the track so much but as much skill to make sure you were always in the optimum lane etc.
Now have scalextric (with PC lap timer - home made before they made it tooo easy )

I had a Scalextric set for xmas when I was about 7 or 8, and was disappointed as I wanted TCR. Then I bought about another 100ft of track from the local emporium for pocket change when I was 12 or 13. It went round the house several times and was awesome (once you ironed out the track connections!) Cars would disappear out the door and then turn up (hopefully) 10 seconds later through the other entrance to the lounge!
When I got a part-time job I bought the craziest three-tier TCR set, with loads of extras. Absolutely loved it, but it didn't have the longevity of the Scalextric.
My boy's gonna get a Scalextric, whether he likes it or not
