I cannot understand why people continuously outbid and raise each other on E bay from the outset. All they do is raise the price unnecessarily for each other. Surely it is better to watch and snipe?

It depends if you're around when the auction ends.
Some people stick the max they will pay for an item and then just leave it to chance.
If 20 people want 1 item and all snipe together in the last 2 minutes that raises the price anyway.
I've had stuff on there with 7 day auctions that have had no bids, and then in the last 20 minutes have trebled the initial bid price.
