Bowling For Columbine on C4 Tonite

'The pen is mightier than the sword, but it's always handy to keep a sword nearby in case the pen fails.' And so begins one of the most shocking (filmmaker Michael Moore at the start goes into a suburban bank to open a new account which offers a free gun to every new customer), fantastic and captivating (his confrontation with actor Charlton Heston, the public face of the NRA, is jaw dropping) documentaries ever made. You will never look at the United States in the same way again. Michael Moore (who was the only Oscar winner at this year's ceremony brave enough to openly slate President George W Bush's war on Iraq) has made a remarkable and chilling account of the US today and its obsession with guns. He asks the question why are is the US so violent and discovers a country that is living and breathing in fear... of the bogeyman

i have it on DVD, its a very good film, funny at times and at others very sad. The CCTV film of the columbine shootings is pretty jaw dropping.
Canada seems far more sensible to me.

Think I might have to tape this one.
I downloaded (so far only CD4) of the spoken word version of "Dude, where's my country?" the other day. But I've not started listening to it yet.

But what makes Canadians less willing to pull the trigger, despite over 7 million people owning guns?
Chris Rock was on the right lines. If bullets were less accesable, would there really be more deaths?
That was easily one of the best films I've seen this year. Michael Moore is a top guy and had no problem questioning the people that make this world so fooked up.
Chareleton Heston is a total dick!
Cheers!

Charlton Heston is just a bigoted old man. Unfortunately he's managed to get himself into a position of some power. Imagine the irony if someone took a pot shot at him at one of his rallies. Unfortunately, Americans don't know what irony is, so it won't happen

Saw some of the program, seemed quite interesting.
My uncle is american and has loads of guns at home. He's very sensible about it though, its just part of American culture.
Its easy to criticise, as though our way of life is a model way to live.My uncle often go's out without locking his front door, often doesnt even lock his car door, never worries about getting anything nicked. He was over here a month ago and commented on all the petty crime, cars stolen, burnt out,bus sheltr vandlism etc, saying why does no-one care or do anything about it.
The US seems to have a can-do approach and protecting yourself is part of that.
Personally i thought the Michigan Militia seemed very well balanced people(most of them ).

Thanks for the clicky - didn't even notice it wasn't there..
As to Michael Moore, I'm sick of him trying to make people like me look like pyschos - particularly when he's using misinformation and "cute" editing to make his point. There are Americans in the world who happen to think that their life is their responsibility, not the government's, and it's up to them to rely on themselves for their own needs. I don't live off the gov't dole, I exercise my right to free speech, pay my taxes, vote in every election, and choose to make the defense of myself and my family my concern, not the government's. I also happen to be an NRA member, because like it or not, they're the only organization who's protected my right to self defense. I might not like all of their politics, but sometimes you have to live with the lesser of two evils. There seems to be a pretty even mix of "We don't understand Americans and their guns" posts to "The police and the justice system in England aren't protecting us" posts here on Scoobynet. Sadly, personal responsibility seems to be something the liberals in both our countries seem to want to do away with, and I think it's awful.

BluWagon,
You are right on. If we were given the right to protect ourselves and our property in this country the way you guys are the UK would be a safer place. As it is it's becoming a lawless mess.
Regards,
tiggers.
