Here's one you really shouldn't try at home - I did this last night and I assure you that its an easy way to make yourself feel really really stupid!
Just bought a dishwasher and needed to provide plumbing for it. Looked in a box section in the corner of the room that contains the soil pipe from the bathroom. In this box is what looked like the cold water pipe to upstairs. So I bought a clamp/tap thing and proceeded to clamp the tap to this pipe so it would puncture/seal/provide a valve.
Only trouble is that when I turned the valve to test that water flowed from it OK, it turned out that it was a gas pipe !!!!
So my top tip for the day is - dont try and plumb a dishwasher in to the gas supply! LOL!
I shall be soldering a replacment section of pipe in place this afternoon!
Many thanks to Scooby96 and his Dad for providing much needed advice following my error.

Goochie,
Make sure you turn the gas off before firing up the torch for the soldering. Shouldn't really need mentioning, but in light of the fact that you have already plumbed a pipe requiring water into the gas supply I thought it may be better to be safe than sorry
tiggers.
Edited to say Damn, DJ beat me to it

Worst part of it was that the mother-in-law to be was on the phone to my other half at the time..... if she could sell little bags of "panic" for £1 she'd be a very rich lady! LOL!
Yes, I will turn the gas off before soldering.
I'm usually good at DIY, mechanical engineer by profession, but plumbing is new to me LOL! Still, I guess you learn from your mistakes dont you.
The whole pipe will be replaced over christmas when I fit the new kitchen.
Scooby96 - I could almost hear your Dad thinking "oh god, whats coming" when I said "errr... I've made a bit of a ****-up" LOL!
I think it's really funny - the other half doesnt though.

For once Chaos is talking sense be VERY VERY careful and blow air through the pipe first this should really been done by a corgi registered plumber.
I have plumbed all sorts from toilets to radiators and have access to loads of free advice/tools and i am fairly profecient diy plumbing but i NEVER NEVER touch gas and i get my plumber in for any gas work any problems and your insurance company will rip up your claim straight awayif they find you have been playing with gas pipes.
.
On a lighter note (and i swear on my sons life this is true) this is exactly what one numptie of a plumber did on a site i was developing I walked in the house to find him mopping water from out of the cooker and for a second thought hey thats nice he's cleaning the cooker out.
One look at his Very red face and i knew something was wrong and to top it all the prospective purchaser and half his family walked in : as i was bollocking him.
I laugh now but at the time i burts a blood vessel and banned him from site immeadiatley

Better to be safe than sorry - wear a raincoat next time you turn the cooker on

Even funnier than a house near us having the hot water connected to the toilet- it was a hot flush!

You are not alone!!!
even the pro,s get it wrong,
the couple next door but one were having gas installed, so the gas board arrived to do the work,
they whipped out the grundomat and set to work, for the ininitiated a grundomat is basically a steel pipe with a loose metal slug that can be moved by compressed air.
the idea is that by rapidly firing air into the slug it vibrates like a slide hammer and bores through the soft earth layer under the road, saves digging up the road..
anyway of the went then all went quiet.. then the jack hammers started and the JCB, arrived...
laugh....... i wet myself,
the stupid buggers had knocked a branch of the watermain and blew every tap and water inlet out of the house opposite,,
the poor girl in there was in tears....and it wasnt laughter,
