Would suggest rules along the following lines:

1. No image will be greater than 800 pixels along its longest side.
2. Image overall will not exceed 120kb.
3. Image must have been taken within the period outlined (i.e. no old photos). E.g. if the competition runs for two weeks from the 1st Decemeber, then the photo must have been taken between 1st Dec to the 14th inclusive.
4. Each submitter can change their posted image at any time (using edit function).
5. Maximum of two (2) images per submitter, per competition.
6. Image must be hosted so that it appears correctly in the competition thread and must remain so for the period of the competition including voting. Any images that do not appear correctly will have their posts removed by the moderators (maybe ?).
7. Image must be titled but not on the image itself. I.e. some bold text naming the image should be posted at the same time as the image itself. In addition, any details of the image itself should also be posted (this is a learning exercise after all). E.g. EXIF data or maybe just aperture, shutter speed, equipment used.
8. There will be no posts in the competition thread other than those for the posting of competition images. All discussion should be held in other threads. Moderators will enforce this (maybe?)
9. Judges decision is final.
10. Images will meet the requirements of the ScoobyNet T&Cs
11. I will always win.

Only thing is we need a pet moderator to police it for us ?

Cheers

Ian

cheers Andy

I have Photoshop Elements,so i should be ok

its understanding the difference between file size, image size on the screen and of course print size that does my head in,so i normally to press a lot of buttons and see what happens

a little competition is a good way to focus the mind though

I'm stuck with waiting for a lab which sounds almost quaint now, although i still have the excitement of opening the packet to look forward too

First off sorry don't really like the word contest, but couldn't think of a better way to put it

I saw something quite similar on another forum and though it was a great idea, but i spend to much time here to be there aswell

I think each individual contest should run for a month and the winner gets to decide the topic for that month, topics can be anything examples a moment in time, parklife, food for thought etc etc just something that conjours up an image
Images should be posted in the topic for that month which will be started by the winner of the previous month, if anyone cannot host there own pics email them to me and i'll be happy to host.

How to decide who wins, i've thought about this and i have 3 ideas
1 replies in topic
in my opinion this will look messy
2 email me your choice of winner
not sure i or mail box would like this if it's popular
3 every month i set a poll on mrcookie.co.uk
easier to see, but open to interference

What do you all think

I'll be up for this. I do a similar thing on another forum and it works quite well and encourages me to think about what I am doing

You'd lose, Bob. Trust me

You could count on me for an entry or two either way - go for it

Bob my thoughts behind it are it will help us less knowledgable learn more about something we like doing

Frisby sorry i didn't know someone had already done one, totally agree your own work etc

Also think that people should post the settings they use unless they reall don't want to, and also if it's been edited in anyway.

Si
Ps what do you all think for a first topic to start.

Think the first one should be Night Time - plenty of that around at the moment

Will it be allowed for people to post past work, or should people be expected to go out and take pictures specifically for the competition. I personally think no previous work should be allowed?

Also, what level of digital manipulation (if any) should be allowed?

and you might as well allow as much digital manipulation as you want, its impossible to police otherwise, and those using scan from 35mm should be allowed extra points

dba, agree on the extra points I reckon if I scanned 24 hours a day, 365 days a week, I wouldn't get through my neg collection before I was 70

Seriously though - how many pics / person for each round? Past work must be allowed I guess because, again, it's impossible to police.

Agree with photo's should be shot for that specific months topic, manipulation wise as long as it's only the photo you've done i.e not cutting and posting onto another background then aslong as it's stated i don't think it matters to much but i'm happy to go with general consensus.

A few suggestions on the format:

- DON'T allow previously taken shots to be entered. I'd like to see us all encouraged to go out and take pictures, rather than simply rifling through old CDs and photo albums. It makes for a much more level playing field too; anyone who's been shooting for years is statistically more likely to have a really good shot of a given subject somewhere in their collection than someone who doesn't have such a library to fall back upon.

- DO allow a degree of digital manipulation. I'd specifically permit cropping, contrast and brightness adjustments, dodging, burning, sharpening and blurring - these can, after all, all be done in the darkroom, and the fact that they're now accessible to many more photographers than their 'wet' equivalents doesn't make them any less valid photographic tools IMHO. What I wouldn't want to see are significant chunks of copy & paste, blending exposures, colour changes and so on. Make the image with the camera, people

- Definitely specify a subject. I need the incentive and direction, especially when the weather's crap. (Request: can we have ideas for stuff that can be shot indoors for when it's really cold or wet please??)

I realise that there's a certain degree of trust involved here, but after all it's not like anyone's actually winning anything concrete. If you enter someone else's photo and win, what have you gained?

I suggest that the first round should run for at least a couple of weeks, so as to give all potential entrants time to hear about the contest and to give people time to get films processed.

I can host photos for anyone who doesn't have web space available.

So, 'night time' to kick off, then? I'd better bung the 1D in the fridge...

A.

Crikey, does that reduce the noise on long exposures then? Crazy!

How about... night-time architecture / buildings?

Cool

Yes.

The 1D suffers from two different image artefacts during long exposures. The first is that bright, 'hot' pixels start to appear all over the image. These aren't too difficult to fix - Photoshop's 'dust & scratches' filter makes short work of them. I don't see any harm in this sort of manipulation.

The second is that the two readout amplifiers in the CCD get hot, and that heat causes the two upper corners of the image to turn purple. This is a bit unfortunate as it's much harder to fix!

Both problems get worse with heat, hence my (joking) comment about putting the camera in the fridge. To be honest I'll probably use my old D30 for this round anyway - and still be at a technical disadvantage compared to those with D60/10D/300D's. These newer 6MP cameras take fantastic long exposures with hardly any noise or hot pixels at all. (I guess I could always use up some good, old fashioned film...)
