The Sunday times carried this on the front page yesterday.

Any suggestions as to which ones they should remove - my vote goes for the ones by the Zoo in Edinburgh and the ones further out on Corstorphine Road - traffic never gets fast enough to cause a serious accident at either of these spots.

Andy

The ones hidden behind the tourist signs on the A9 north of Perth.

"Welcome to Scotland and enjoy our lovely tourist attractions - do it all this trip, because in a few weeks you won't have a license. Have a nice trip!"

tiggers.

I'd forgotten about the one on the A9 - near Dunkeld IIRC. There is another one near Bankfoot on what would otherwise be a perfect overtaking spot

There's a piece in today's Times as well. See p6 "Drivers told to identify rogue speed cameras". Apparently the Department of Transport is asking people to report speed cameras that "they believe are hidden or are failing to improve road safety."

Alistair Darling is quoted as saying: "The best and most effective camera would be the one that doesn't issue a single ticket. Any camera that continues to generate hundreds of thousands of pounds in fines is failing". He goes on to say that "We don't want your money, we want you alive.".

Sounds like a load of PR/spin to me, but it truly would be good if the Government has finally woken up to the fact that the present situation is unacceptable. It will be interesting to see if any action actually results from this, or if they're simply after positive press attention.

His views are shared by transport experts, who point out, however, that removing cameras does carry a risk. If fatal accidents occur after a camera has been switched off, they say, there could be a public backlash.

To guard against this, those cameras which do not meet the executive’s criteria will gradually be phased out and the level of road accidents closely monitored.

“The long-term aspiration is to remove these cameras but the first step in advancing that is to reduce the extent of enforcement activity at those cameras which fall outside the criteria,” said Latimer

Yeah looks like spin, phased out over the next 40 years likely
