To anyone with the Special Extended versions.
after reading the back of the packs it says that the movie is on discs 1 & 2. Now, does this mean that the film is split between them (requiring a disc change) or is say the Dolby Digital version on one disc and the DTS version on the other?

On the fellowship of the ring, the film is split between both discs, takes into account the extended sequences no doubt.
Not sure when the two towers extended is out, got the two disc pack, but the normal length film on one and behind the scenes and previews of return of the king is on the other
Cheers
Jim

two towers came out yesterday.
Put off buying it now - I can't be bothered swapping discs.
Will wait and see what Santa brings!

Ordered my Two Towers Extended edition from Play last week. My account show the item as shipped a few days ago so I'm expecting it any day now.
If it's like FOTR, it will be split over the two main discs. Doesn't bother me as I doubt I'll be able to watch it all in one go anyway. Apparently there are 40 mins extra on this DVD relase

Yeah a full forty minutes... the changing of discs would be a handy place to put in the break for drinks and comfort!
People forget the early days before duel layer don't they... you used to have to flip the disc!

Fellowship extended edition was over 2 discs, thus requiring a swap, pretty sure two towers will be the same, and also ROTK, when it comes out.
As for why most films are DD and not DTS, hmm, don't know. Most know DTS is better, maybe it's due to the master DVD's being produced from was orginally encoded for DD and not DTS and thus would be extra expense when mastering the CD's, dunno.

4 discs in total. 42 mins of extended scenes.
Discs 1 - 2 The Film. 3 - 4 appendices. Lot of them

return of the king is supposedly going to be nearly 3 and half hours in the cinema and the extended dvd is going to be an hour longer than that!
seen 2 towers on loaded247.com (region1) for £24.99. I usually get all my discs from there, cheaper, free postage and normally get them before the shops do!

are you saying you haven't got the first matrix film on dvd? - scandalous!
Just got my R1 edition of T3 - can't see a box set of the 3 anywhere.
Had my fingers burnt with box sets before - when the origianl star wars special editions came out. I bought the set of 3 on vhs and the first 2 packs I had each had a dodgy cassette in them, ended up swapping them for individual cassettes. Only films I've bought as a set since is "The Blues Brother" but only cos you don't have choice...

I've got the Star Wars Special Edition box set on Laser Disc
Remember those, the size of an LP and not only do have to turn the disc over, sometimes it's over 2 disc's!

Never trusted DVD or CD changers in a home setup (funny that i do trust a cd changer in a car though ), had a CD changer and it fecked up, so was narked off, so just go for single disc devices now.
Boxsets, yeah, know the feeling. This is why I'm waiting until next year before I get any of the LOTR stuff, as there will no doubt be some platinum edition boxset containing all three films in extended format with possibly more goddies, same goes for The Matrix, will get it when the SE boxset comes out.
Wondering what they are going to do for DVD release of Kill Bill, I can see two separate DVDs for vol 1 and 2, just to squeeze more money, but maybe there will be a boxset of it, with extras? maybe directors cut or something? now that would be cool

yeah and the collectors box set has an extra disc as well showing the proces of creating the Lord of the Rings Collectables.
as well as the figure/collectable of Smeagol and a book illustrating the evolution of the gollum character.
gonna go buy it tomorrow but prob get the standard one as the above is over £40.
dont understand y they choose today to release it when most things come out on a monday or maybe a friday ?

Got mine last friday, £24.99 @ CDWOW. Those who have got theirs, go to the scene selections on disc 1 and go to the last scene (fan club credits), then press down and a "ring" appears. Select that and you will see a surprise. Not brilliant, but a laugh once. If you have the R1 "Fellowship" you'll find a better one in the same place (it's not on R2 due to the PG13 rating).
The film is spread over two discs due to the high resolution of the transfer, peaking at 10mb/s (the max the technology can do), and the inclusion of DTS. If you check the transfer rate of some single disc movies which also have extras crammed on the rate is often as low as 3mb/s, leading to a lousy picture on larger sets (particularly plasmas).

most of if not all american dvds have dts, the UK has only recently been able to author dts locally. Also as uk is european, it has to suffer with having to have multiple languages. With all these languages there is not enough room to lay the dts track which is much larger than the DD track.
Abit, release a version of dvd that contain dts only in english which essentially is the american version so you dont pay for wasted languages/space and have more room for extras
