My uncle from the US is visiting and i'm thinking of taking him to York for a day out.

The railway museum's ea must and a guided walk round the city is also fascinating. (it's called the Snickleways)

Didn't bother with the Viking Centre due to the fact I hate trashy, waxwork touristy stuff.

Wait until the evening and go on a Ghost Walk.... with Mad Meg (at least, I think that's what she's called!)

the viking centre never used to be trashy. York Minster is nice if you like cathedrals/architecture. Betty's tearooms always good too

I had a really good day out at Eden Camp just out side York.

English history at its best. So real it sent shivers down my back. A very moving experience

Yes the railway museum and the guided walk must be tops. Don't forget to show him the Shambles and the Cathedral. The other museums are good too. It is a while since I was last there though.

A proper cup of tea and a sticky bun at Betty's is a must.

The Castle museum is also a must.

The Viking Centre would probably be interesting for him.

The Cathedral (I thought it was a minster but there you go) is good but is beaten by Beverley Minster for architecture!

Also try castle museum(sp) or even river trip.

most people love visiting the Minster. Need any info just ask.

When I was at Uni in Hull used to go to York shopping with the (now) missus.

Not really a tourist attraction but....there is a great little shop that sells roast meat sandwiches - they freshly roast the meat (Lamb/Pork/Beef/Chicken) and put great big slabs in buns! If your in the town centre and are hungry worth a taste! Follow your nose and look for the queue outside

mmmmm I'm so hungry now...

i agree with Burr and JR55. A visit to Harewood house followed by a ghost walk in the evening would be a great day, well spent, especially with peeps coming from the states

I spent a short week in york earlier this year.

The Catherdral is good, but when i was there they expected big donations at each entry point to the different interesting bits, if you plumped up for everything it came to about £25 each, they are only suggested donations mind. It was in the news a few weeks after so their policy might of changed.

just walking round the city shambles ect is ok for a few hours, Take a walk along the wall too, and the guided walks are good also.

The NRM is amazing, you can spend half a day if you rush round, but you really need a whole day.

Jorvik viking place is terrible, its shabby and the majortity of the artefacts are replicas due to the real ones being in museums, you would be better off going to one of the museums for a lot less cash.

Parking is pretty bad in the centre not a lot of it and exsepnsive, the park and ride is quite good, or do what i did and parked in the NRM car park everyday as they had lots or cameras and a attendent on the gate.

If you want to impress a yank Definitley take him to Chatsworth I have been several times now and it always knocks me out.

And those sarnies are excellent Richard work !!!!!

The minster in York has to be one of the most beautiful and impressive cathedrals in Europe (bar St pauls).
