Any electricians in the Leighton Buzzard area want some "cash-in-hand"???

There's a fantastic valued consumer unit from www.screwfix.com for around £65, or even a tad cheaper, c/w RCD and MCBs (some on the RCD side, some not).

Go web hunting to Screwfix!

Thumbs up

MartinM has said it: Screwfix do a really good one, split load etc, with some MCB's controlled by an RCD, and some by a standard twin pole switch. About £65.
I've just paid that for a BOX in France:

I put one in for my mate about a year ago, and it only took about 4 hours.

Just mark each incoming wire, and each outgoing wire with bits of sticky label, folded over the wire to say where it goes to, or came from, and take the time to tidy the wiring abit while you're at it.

BTW: we paid £80 for that same fuseboard, it's come down since then, and we thought it a good buy when we did it,

Cool

I bought mine from Wickes, you have to sort out what you want first as you buy it all separate, but a split load box with the usual MCBs & 1 RCD was just under £70

You just have to tap the incoming live aginst the neutral and one small pop later, it'll be safe for a few hours until the 'leccy people get to your local substation.

You take the main fuse out, it's in a smallish black box.

Wink

You CAN take the main (board's) fuse out, aly=though you'll find it's lead sealed at both ends.

When I did a split load for my house, and may mate's new box, I just cut both lead seal wires with a sharp pair of sidecutters, then replaced them afterwards, with the cut out of site.

Strictly, it's illegal, but so what?...........Better than getting a belt off it.

If it's just removing an old consumer unit and replacing with a new one, I'd reckon an hours work (MAX) for a sparky (£50), plus you might have to let them get the bits (£100). Worst case scenario then is about £150.
