how long do points stay on for?
#1
There are so many conflicting accounts having talked to ppl about long the penalty points stay on for.
I thought it was 5.
Someone told me it is only 3.
My brother told me it is only 2 now.
What is the truth????

Not sure if this has changed but I have always been under the impression that points are on your license for 3 years but you cannot actually get them physically taken off until after 4.
I will see if I can find a website or publication to confirm this though...

They actually stay applicable for three years, but reside on your license for 5 years. Remember Insurance companies always ask if you have a conviction within the last five. his is a way of them checking. The above is generally for speeding/ minor points convictions. I'm not so sure for more serious convictions like reckless driving/drink driving etc as this may be down to the Magistrate or court
Hope this is clear

When you use numbers your one about years?
The correct answer is:
3 years for totting up on points purposes (i.e. your theoretically allowed 12 points in a 3 yr period)
It stays on the license for 4 years - so it could be on your license but not count towards totting up if say its over 3 years since offence date on license
It stays on the license for 10 years for all drink driving offences - for which you would have got a ban anyway - so no points on the license (yep being banned scrubs out the points tally)

You're right, they count towards totting up for a ban for 3 years. But if you apply for a new licence they will still be there until 4 years.
Insurance companies often ask if you have points and they can ask for wahtever period they feel like, ie had any points in the last 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 years.
So it depends who's asking and for what. But 3 years is the important one.

Damn! I'm wrong... It's 4 years full for most 'normal' offences.
Look at:
