Plasma TV's
#2
Amazingly, I was going to make a post about the exact same thing.
I have been seriously looking into plasma and was all set to buy the Hitachi 42in effort circa £3500gbp
While chatting with the shop owner I mentioned my love of Sky Sports News [someone has to watch it].
He then warned me about SCREEN BURN and proceeded to show me a plasma screen which they had been watching Sky News on. Where the borders are you could see they had burnt into the screen leaving a residual shadow.
You don't notice this shadow if you know nothing about this problem but, as soon as you do, its the only thing you do see.
Like that itch on your back you can't reach.
Now I for one cannot see myself paying thousands for something I will likely ruin inside of two weeks ownership.
The manufacturers will not replace under warranty. The screens have a "White Wipe" function which allegedly cleans up and removes the burn but this does not look to effective.
Looks like I'll be saving myself a couple of thousand and invest in the best CRT I can find instead.
If there are any people out there who can convince me this will not happen to my plasma, please do.

I know about the screen burn as we have two plasma screens in work and one has burn on it already due them being used to display call stats and the task bars have burnt onto them as these are static all the time.

You will suffer from burn though effects can be minimised by surfing channels regularly...one day SKY will wake up and allow the logo's to be moved or deleted...I mean it's a subscription service so why have to advertise all the time when I'm already paying for it?
I did buy a Sharp 20" LCD yesterday for the bedroom though...needed something that took no space....really cool
Might go for a 30" LCD for the conservatory...extra advantage is the screen ain't as reflective as glass, so LCD better than CRT or Plasma in some light conditions

Screen burn is caused by static images literally being burnt into the material of the screen or is it being burnt onto the tube?? I forget
Anyway
It can be avoided by regularly switching channels.
The same thing happens with PC monitors, thats why screen savers were invented
be nice if the TV knew when it wasn't being watched and switched to screen saver or went into a power save mode

Plasma tv's look the business and do give fantastic picture quality, but forking out over 3 grand for a tv just seems a bit excessive in my eyes.
Yeah, okay, maybe I'm a tight wad too!

Fuzzy Football is not the Plasma mate - its the Digital TV giving up on trying to resolve blades of grass wilst the camera is panning and also lots of fine detail in the crowd as a background. Just overloads it - was moaning to myself about the same thing watching the rugby via Telewest. It's compression...
Plasmas burn so easily compared to CRT's - viz our boardroom one always says 'Aiwa' even when switched off!
Get a 42" Rear Proj from Tesco for £900 and bide your time... These look FABULOUS in a living room - crap in a shop...
