Question

Been looking for a scooby for some time now and Iv been doing some seriuos thinking at the moment.
Im only 23 years old and Iv been wanting a classic scooby for years but now the prices of the bugeyes are coming down so do I buy a cheap run about and wait two years for the prices of the bugeyes to come down and for my Insurance to come down to or do I push my-self to buy a classic?

I think waiting 2 years would be much better but I wait one NOW

Just do it. I'm on my second scoob and yes its the classic shape. My advice is to go for a UK scoob because of your age. I'm 26 and am paying around 700 quid for TP only even though I've got a clean license and not a single accident in my life (touch wood).

Depends how much you can afford really. The classic shape are very good value for money, I had a 94 WRX Wagon, loved it, but i kinda lost faith when it needed a new gearbox, clutch and other bits, but hey, it was modified and a fair few years old, so that is to be expected.

First thing i would do is to get some rough ideas of the prices of a few classics and bug-eyes, then get an insurance quote, then decide what to do.

From personal experience I'd go for the newest car you can afford. It is a tricky decision I know. I'm sitting here pondering getting a new STi, but I know it'd be a total waste of money, but it's there, at the back of my mind that I *need* another scooby, and my thought is this, why not get the best I can.

So you could look at getting finance on a very new car.

Dunno if that is much advice really?

If your on a budget Id get a bugeye as it will cost you a lot less to service. Classics are a service every 6 months or 7,500 miles - whichever comes first. Bugeyes are mostly 10k miles IIRC. That was the only gripe I had with my scoob. If you want to keep the FSSH then u pay dealer prices £400-500 major service and about £120 minor.

If I do buy one does it mean I will be poor or next next few years? I THINK SO.

Need a good think. Its not just about buying the car its also the hidden running costs that I dont know about.

If you can't afford anything else then don't bother, it is only a car after all

You may have to get one to help get it out of your system.

If you don't get one, you'll always hanker after one.
Once you've got one, you will soon learn they are not cheap to run, and once you've done it, it's not so hard to live without one....

I got one to get it out my system - now I know there are not many other cars I can buy which are as fast & cheap. However, while I *may* get another one at some point, I'm not so bothered about it, as I've "been there, done that".

So, what I am saying is basically go for it!!! It will niggle at you for the next 2 years if you don't....

Depends what you're looking for. I've seen it go for 5k for a 92-93 Impreza. But if you want to go for an early type RA (which you shouldnt because its a nightmare to run and insure) then you'll be looking around 6.5-7k at least. Havent seen one go for less before.

Just make sure you've got enough money to do a full service including cambelt change and also for insurance. I think you'll be paying about 1.5k per year because of your age.

You can get an early low-mileage import for 6.5-7k
