Police cars in London

I've seen a few police cars in London that are marked i.e. stripes and big flashing lights but the cars themselves are red or dark blue as opposed to the usual white.
Anyone know what they are?

Lots of silver ones too.
As suprabeast said the police have woken up to the fact that white is a bad colour for resale.
Solid red is diplomatic protection though as also already said.
