Have been getting the same now for about 2 weeks, phone rings, u answer, nothing happens and the number is witheld always around 3 or 4pm...i reckon its those automated dailing things that are programmed to call numbers in sequence then notes down which is a private number or a company.....could be wrong tho

I was told by the phone companies and the police (when i was dealing with a psycho ex bird) that they call must be answered and the line open for a minimum of 3 seconds if the number is withheld and it is to be traced....
No idea how accurate that is, but thats what i was told..
p.s its an auto dialler i reckon

Auto diallers are used for Telesales outfits - poor muggins getting paid 0.0001% commission sits with a headset on and the dailler dials 1000's of numbers one after the other hoping for an answer. When someone does answer the dialler should then tell the poor ***** pc that Mr Smith is in and flashes up Mr Smiths details on the screen for him or her to then go into their sales pitch.

As above, it's called a predictive dialler. For each logged in session, the dialler dials 50 numbers simultaneously, 1st one to answer gets put through to the poor sap plugged into The Matrix while the rest of the calls are dropped.

I've also had these calls , and was told that the call centre computers dial about 50 numbers at a time and when the first number is answered they get the sales pitch and all the other numbers still ring for 5 - 10 seconds ..I was going to get a device that shows the number calling and if its "with held" then i just wouldn't answer, but unfortunatly some work contracts I get are with held numbers

actually, looking at the times, probably not telesales as they're restricted on when they can call, unless your number is on some foreign list to be dialled from a different timezone.

I've been getting these as well...only they're listening to all the answerphone message, waiting 2 secs and then hanging up. So I come home nearly every day to 7 or 8 missed calls, all to the tune of E. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep
It's VERY irritating. All caller withheld and ranging throughout the day, from 7am through to about 9pm.

ickle john thinks it might be a reverse charges scam where someone is using our line topay for their reverse charge so even if we dont change the number u're still gonna have to phone 'em!!

Hobo, it's a fax machine, probably a wrong number, some bugger is trying to send you junk faxes overnight. Borrow a fax machine, plug it in, find out what the fax is then give the company hell and demand compensation for disturbed sleep.
Mice_Elf, yours is probably telesales. If the telesales minion is targeted for talktime (i.e. time they spend on a connected call) then they'll probably use your answerphone to build up time (I used to do that )

It is 100% a predictive dialler - not a fax machine. I had these calls - then I registered with the telephone preference service and they have since completely stopped..
