I still can't believe anyone considers Blair Witch Project to be a horror movie. It's dreadful. There were episodes of Tales Of The Unexpected that were more scary than that.
Where did the Moors scene from American Werewolf In London reach? That was very eerie.

DP, the bit from AWIL they focused on was the transformation into the werewolf. Again, wasn't far behind. Definitely top twenty.

I hate horror films and I was absolutely fine with The Blair Witch Project, except for the fact I thought it was rubbish. That pretty much says that it wasn't scary at all.

The Excorcist is as dull as dishwater - most I've managed is 20 minutes.
I don't find horror films scary - they're all varying degrees of sh!te.
Blair Witch Project is only film I've found slightly disturbing - which I'm putting down to the "Crimewatch UK" reconstruction feel that it has - Fact will always be scarier than Fiction (and no, I dont mean that BWP is a true story!!)
Would liked to seen BWP before it got out that it was a hoax.

Hmmmmmmm.........
EastEnders (when Trevor was being rather evil) rates higher than Candyman, Misery etc.....
... though all of the above are soundly thrashed by at least 20 places by:
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Wizard of Oz.

The Ring definitely deserved top 10 listing, if not top 5. Seen both the Japanese and US versions and both have the same affect when she crawls out the TV - makes my hairs stand on end!
Borrowed The Ring 2 (Japanese version) off a friend at work so I'll be hopefully getting the old pooper going tonight.
Don't know about anyone else, but I still find it really difficult to watch The Exorcist. I first watched it when I was about 12, and it's had an adverse affect on me ever since. It's on this blo0dy Saturday too! I'll invite some friends around I think.
I went to see it at the cinema with a girlfriend when the ban was lifted, about 10-12 years ago now. She laughed all the way through it and told me I was a complete windbag!!
Anyone else like this or was she right ?

I'd agree that it's a lot easier to watch once you know what is coming next, but i first saw it when i was about 10, and like you, was very disturbed by it. I *hated* them walking down the corridor to her room, and hated it even more when they went in, as you knew she'd look even more grotesque! Very, very scary.
One film i thought they missed was Videodrome - i think i'd have that in a top 100 at least...

Yep, the fear of anticipating what's waiting for you on the other side of the door, still doesn't prepare you. The film is pure evil.
Imagine being the girl acting the part and looking at yourself after the makeup had been put on. You really would freak out!

To digress slightly - my fiancee's aunt has just had an Exorcist to her house to sort out some guitar playing poltergeist that lives in the loft!
she wouldn't let me observe, bah!

Werewolf flicks get me.
Already mentioned the proper American Werewolf film, with the moors and the scene in the Tube station ranking as being somewhat scary.
There's also a scene in Silver Bullet where the werewolf is hunting its hunters, beneath the mist in a field at night.
Dog Soldiers has its moments, but is more amusing than frightening.
Children of the moon (I think) was a Hammer House of Horror episode, which terrified me as a kid.
And the first Howling movie was good in parts too.
Was pleased to see that the scene with the vampire at the window in Salem's Lot made it into the 100. Though some of the top 20 are very dubious! Carpenter's The Fog was a good horror film too, but haven't seen it in years.
