Just thought i'd even things up a little. After all the threads about speeding and fines and points and cameras and and and....

I was let off the other nite for doing 50ish in a 40 zone.

Quiet road, 1am, no other cars and about 100 yards from 60 zone but i still could have had 3pts + whatever fine it is now.

Two coppers stood with a laser gun thingy, and who obviously DO have some common sense.

So, its not all doom and gloom well for me anyway

I've been left off speeding before, like you say some police do use commonsense to the conditions at the time.

Just depends on the policeman or woman you get.

Mmm, policewoman...cuff me, cuff me.... (I digress)

i've been stopped for speeding many times and touch wood i've never received anything other than a warning. i guess it just depends on the officer, conditions etc.

I got stopped for speeding on a quiet road at 11.40 pm (43 in a 30 zone, just after the GLF zone ends). And let off.

They pretty much explained they were doing it not to catch speeders, but to stop people so they had a reason to breathalyse them. It was a Friday night vaguely near Christmas.

As I didn't get the points, and hadn't been drinking, it suited me fine.

Nice boat Brendan, when did you come in on it?

Like they need any excuse to stop people!!

But thinking about it at 1am they were probably trying to catch burglars who always have a nasty habit of speeding and would definitely stop for a cop who stood in the road waving at him to do so.

Me... empty M25, Saturday lunchtime, 2001, pulled.

Traffic cop: "Do you know how fast you were going?"
Me: "I'm sorry, not a clue. Its an empty road and I was making what felt like reasonable progress"
Traffic cop: "Well we've got you on video at 102mph"
Me: "Oh dear"
Traffic cop: "Oh dear yes. If you were driving any other car, we'd be nicking you. Now keep it to 85 and p*ss off".

I have also been pulled for going much faster than that and just got a fixed penalty (3pts, £40 fine), but that ones a long story

Whether you get nicked or not is down to the conditions, down to the experience of the officer and down to how you behave when stopped.

I assumed that they were Impreza fans

I got pulled in Wollaton Park area of Nottingham for doing 53 in a 40.....

The comedy challenged Officer Dibble that leant through my window anounced "This is Wollaton Park Sir not Donnington Park"..

He then proceeded to chastise me for the Scooby Doo on the back partial shelf and sent me on my way....

Nil Points and Nil Fine....

Top Guy I thought although ever so slightly Smug....

It really does depend on how you talk to them, you get cocky, and they'll start getting picky. SAying that, they can come out with some daft questions. In my youth, I used to drive a mini, got pulled, the copper bends down to talk to me, looks round the vast interior, and asks "Travelling alone?". Felt like checking the glovebox.

Had a couple of lucky escapes tho, 3 points and a £40 for 103mph on a dual carriageway to name but one. He did say he could have banned me!
