Depends on what you want it for.

A good hardtail will easily fit into the £800 category - given your weight and strength there's little point going for the lightest of featherweights, so the marin (or a Specialized Rockhopper) would be fine, or perhaps a Merlin / Rock Lobster mail order special for that slightly more custom feel.

Whatever you get make sure the wheels and spokes are up to your weight, otherwise you'll wreck them in no time!

 

Good point! ive got the 2001 Nail Trail at the moment. Just broke something on the frame this one seems to have better components and Hydralics.

Try the Kona Nunu 2003, best mate's got that pretty good bike. I just dont like the seat possition

From what I can see you have damaged the front gear cable stop?????

You could get around this witha small jubilee clip etc.


Not sure about your idea for a new bike..... Its not up to much. Forks are a bit pikey and those brakes are not very good. To be honest I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole

I would go for maybe a Specialized Rockhopper disc around the £490.00+ mark or the Kona Caldera for £680.00 aprox. Both use Shimano 525 hydro brales which are bloody great.Also the forks are better built.

So much so That I have got shot of my Hopes that never bloody worked !!! and always go wrong. To getting a set of 525's They are cheap and dont look much. BUT THEY WORK BETTER AND WILL FOR A LOT LONGER THAN STUPID MINIS.

Try Some of the better dealers like "Bonthrone Bikes" in London. They are realy cheap.

I've got Minis and they've not failed to work yet. Bit noisy at times, and they fade on really long descents, but back-to-back with Hayes hydraulics I can't knock them.

They eat pads though!

Shop around, this is the time of year that 2004 bikes come out so all the sales will be starting...

 

The Kona can be had for £700.00 just try the big retailers.. NOT EVANS etc they charge full prices.


Anyone who has a good set of minis is lucky!!! I have had 5 sets and nevr realy found them to be good. Also if you read some of the worlds bike forums you will find a very high percent of people have major problems with Hopes. best things they aver made are "Ti glides"

The **** has fallen out of the bike market... its a great time to buy.

Unless you buy second hand... that could realy get you a bargain..

Difference!! Hayes rather than 525 shimanos. When I ride £6k worth of bikes (2) I find that I am no longer impressed with gimmics. Ive tried the hayes.Good brakes. But I found the 525's better.

I get my new set tomorrow. My mates laugh but they always want to borrow my bike when we are out!!! Could get them Gold plated in Turkey for a few quid....

03 model giant xtc4 was 650 quid can be had for 450 now and is very very well spec'd
look in mtb mags and a couple of shops advertise at 450 ish

Shop around: there are bargains to be had with last year's models.
I bought myself a titanium framed bike, (OK:it WAS a Raleigh, but what the hell?), with Titanium bars, and full XT groupset a few years ago. It had been sold at £1199, and I got it for £699!

trust your uncle luke on this... If it aint got ABUS on the side dont buy it. Also a normal type key not the barrel type which can all be opened in seconds.With the value of my bikes.... I sleep well knowing that Abus will protect them..!

Check ..

Most insurance companies will not pay out if no part of the lock is found..And No power tools are used...

get a camera and make some little marks on the frame and take pics of marks to identify bike. Also I have a couple of hidden notes that a bike mechanic might find if the bikes got nicked. It has my details on.I ask all shops etc to confirm with me that it is not stolen.

I use an Oxford motorbike lock and ground anchor at home, and take the lock with me when I'm out on the bike(s). Since I don't use them for travelling to/from places the weight's not a problem, and the bikes and secured to the car's(non-removable) towbar.

The bike I *do* use for actual transport is secures with an Abus Granit, though it's a few years old now and probably not as secure as it might be. Then again it's an old dog of a bike so I'd be amazed if ayone woud really want it.

 

Tracker..can only be fitted in the down tube... the scum shine a torch down. If they see it they smash it to bits with a long tube.

getting it stolen is one thing...But by having the mark marked with your postcode etc or even better getting it engraved will help maybe getting it back.
