Just wondering hwo much you would/do give to your children and what they have to do to earn it and how old they are.
Is £1 a week reasonable for kids at junior school?

I've often thought about this, for when I have some kids!
"Back in my day, when I was a lad, blah blah blah."
Dunno mate, but how old are they?
And what would a pound buy them in the sweet shop?

Havent got any.
But I give my niece and nephew a fiver each, when I see them, which is two weekends in the month.
They are 10 and 12.
Ive never seen what they spend it on though.
I also spoil them when they are here coz they deserve it.
Its a big deal for them to eat out, so I have introduced them to Chinese, Italian, and Indian food, Tappas bar next week.
I do without going out with the lads and go to the pictures, or bowling, or the zoo, etc, or get a cheesey kids DVD and curl up on the couch eating a bowl of Revels. Very relaxing.
Its nice to be able to give them back though.....anyway I digress,

My 7 year old gets £1 a week if he cleans his room, and a clip 'round the lug'ole if he doesn't. He's only just learning the value of money as have to admit we spoilt him rotten before.

#50pm into a savings account for when theyre 18. If theyve been good then they get sweets / dvd or something. Took them to Santa Pod last weekend - ungrateful buggers got bored within 1/2 hour, had to teach them a lesson so stayed ALL day

My 15 yr old was getting about 3.50 a week for the last couple of years. But since he started demanding it, and not doing what he asked him (including homework), I've stopped it. He still gets cinema tickets weekly (same price, sometimes even twice a week), and I have no doubt he pockets some of the dinner money. He'll get the chance to earn loads when we get the new house - all that decorating...

My littl'un, 8, doesn't really need money yet but whatever he gets he has to immediately give 25% back as rent for his room.
This goes into a savings account and we double it for him but he doesn't know.

I use to give my daughter £10 a week as long as she done a bit of hoovering, dusting, washed some dishes and kept her room tidy. She got the hump as she was 26 only joking Shes now 16 got 2 part time jobs and goes to college. Now shes got money of her own coming in, she not interested in £10 a week pocket money so me or the wife do the chores (usually me ) Still at least she learnt the value of money and is good at saving

I don't really give my 12yr old daughter spends as such ( I only see her at weekends) however, when she goes on holidays she receives a large bung, gets nice prezzies at b/days, xmas etc. Also she gets suprised from time to time - got her a new gameboy SP the other week for no apparent reason ( well chuffed ), and if her phone runs out of credit muggins here stumps up for the phone card.
When I think about it, she never actually asks me for anything, she just gets , which can't be a bad thing.
In answer to the question , yes, a quid a week is fair. I like the ideas of tidying the room etc aswell, it instills a sense of value.

Don't forget I only see her at weekends - and like I said she doesent get "spends". Also,if you read the post, she never asks for anything ( unlike some kids). I just think its nice to surprise them now&again. I wouldn't call that spoilt.

Mine don't get pocket money each week (10 & 13). If they go into town on Saturday, they usually get £5. We've got a Horse for the eldest one which costs an arm and a leg to keep, so she wants to spend all her time with it (which is safer IMO than roaming the streeets with her mates).

My parents give my kids pocket money 3 yr old gets 50p, 4 year old gets £1.00 & 6 year old gets £1.50 (per week) and they never spend it. When we go to the paper shop they'll ask for sweets, I say "fine thats what your pocket moneys for" They say "Won't you get them for us Daddy?" I say "No" They say "All right we won't have them" fine with me
When they get a bit older I will put them on performance related pocket money which is what I had from the age of about 8.

My 12 year old stepdaughter gets £3 a week on the condition that she keeps her room tidy and empties the dishwasher each day. I bought her a cellphone and she pays for her own vouchers - this has been a good move as she's pretty sensible with it now and always gets her mates to ring her ! Pocket money is suspended if she gives her mother any lip, but the very threat of withholding payment is usually enough to make her behave !!

I used to get a certain amount for washing the car, cutting grass, keeping room tidy and any other notable bits and pieces, which were all at an agreed rate, there was also a "generally helpful" bonus payment which was down to how willing I had been to carry out the tasks, and probably if I'd done them with a smile on my face. It taught me that money doesn't grow on trees and you have to earn it.
In my day I used to present a list on a Saturday morning and negotiate, I guess now my kids will email me a spreadsheet

I use to get £5 a week 15-16, obviously it stopped when I started my apprenticeship at 16 but I wasn’t interested in £5 when I was earning £80 a week!!!! It seemed a fortune at 16 didn’t know what to spend it all on.
