A friend of mine is nigerian and he has a driving license (nigerian) am I right in saying this is valid in this country for 12 months only, and then he will have to take a british driving test theory and practical after or within the twelve months?

Probably best to contact the DVLA but I wouldn't have thought his licence was valid over here.....

Chances are they will think its a fake....... As most things Nigerian are.
