They are "for hire" when the "for hire" light is on, and not for hire when it's off......that's the only distinction we made.
Also they can pick up a "FARE" any where, private hire have to be booked.

Boss / owner of ryan air passed taxi exam, so he could stick plates on the back of his SL500 or 600.
He now drives in the bus lane in major city of Ireland to bypass all of the traffic....!
Smart move me thinks....
Aren't taxi drivers also excluded from the london congestion charge? Hmmmm....

For many years, Coutts Bank had a black cab in the car park at 440 Strand. It was used by the then Chairman to goto all the London offices. It was the quickest way around London and they used it in all the bus lanes. Don't know if they still have one, but it was certainly there when I left in 1998.
It wasn't licensed as a black cab, they had simply bought a cab from the manufacturers and used it as a normal car with no cab license plate.

My dads a london black cabbie, and hes not a w@nker!!
I think that they are able to use bus lanes with or without a passenger, they may be on the way to a pick up address.
got to say though, U-turning black cab drivers do get up my nose, even as a kid in the back of the cab my dad would chuck a Uee in a busy high street and we`d be hiding in the back shouting "not again dad"

They're allowed to use them POB or not
In fact, there is an argument going on (well last time I was interested) that Private Mini Cabs (the properly PCO regulated ones) be allowed the same rights as Black Cabs with regards setting down/bus lanes etc. Not too hard as they should be plated when it all comes into force.
Black cabs doing Uee's
As a courier, you got a second sense as to what a Black Cab might do - as in someone's hand go up on the pavement & a cab would cut across your bows to the side of the road That sense didn't always work as I have the scars and a mangled thumb to prove - Uee'd behind a traffic light/island pedestrian crossing in the Whitechapel Rd & didn't see me, though I wasn't doing 30 tbh...
Glad I'm still not "On The Road"
