Question

After doing some research into the job and qualifications needed, I would quite like to pursue it.

Problem is: How to gain the qualifications? Does anyone have any experience of being a fitness instructor or know anyone that is? I have no idea how to/where to gain the standard of competence that fitness clubs/recreation centres required.

Seems strange that i can't find out, even LearnDirect didn't know!

Cheers for any replies

Yes. I asked a recreation centre and they suggested some. I then asked a fitness club if they employ people with these qualifications and they said no.

Got my diploma from these guys ...
Premier Global

The YMCA also do a very good program where you can do the courses in Modules and not invade your worklife.

Edited to add

My brother-in-law is a Personal Trainer. I have done work for him on several occasions.
I used to run circuit training classes but had to stop.
It all depends on what kind of trainer you want to be. The majority of the pay monthly Fitness Centers are more interested in your 25-100 pounds a month than giving people a lifestyle change they really need.
Your working hours will be terrible as you will be expected to work when other people are in their leisure time.
As I said, decide what kind of trainer you want to be and act accordingly.

I spent 10 years as a gym instructor, starting in late 80's.

Its a daft job unless you are either....very lucky and train superstars or 17 years old.

The main parts of the job are:

Working till stupid hours in the eve

Cleaning sweat off machines (nice)

Talking to fat arsed lazy people about being a fat ****

and wondering how you can live on such crap pay!
