Dealer needs insurance certificate from me to tax car. I still have insurance cover as I didnt cancel when I sold my old car (as renewal is Oct 13th). This insurance states I can drive any other car (other than rental/lease) with 3rd party insurance.
So am I correct in assuming that the Post Office should accept this insurance certificate for buying a tax disc?
Simon.

Doesn't other car have to be insured in the first place? If not then anyone with no insurance could simply ask a mate to nip along to PO with a policy that states "can drive any other car not belonging etc" and get it taxed for him. I don't see why dealer can't tax for you using his own dealer insurance which he must have? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick which wouldn't be that unusual D

You need to provide specific proof that the new car is insured before they will issue a tax disk. Therefore you will need a valid insurance certificate or cover note that states the registration of the new car.
The 3rd party cover on your old certificate only shows that you are covered to drive any car, it doesn't show that the new car is insured.
The dealer should have to do this for every new car so should really have told you already.

Insurance needs to state the reg number unless it is for multi car purposes. The 3rd party cover you have is for any vehicle not owned by you or under a HP agreement to you.
If you use the dealer to insure he will have to put the business name in the "log Book" and add another owner to the count. Pretty sure you will not get away with it - PO are getting sharper on this issue.
