Question

Old question but anyway:

I got double-flashed by a Gatso on the other side of the road to me last night. Single carriageway, no markings on my side of the road, speedo was indicating less than 35 in a 30 limit.

Assuming the camera has film in it, will I get a NIP? Or can't GATSOs be used for oncoming traffic?

cheers, Craig

My Road Angel doesn't go off when you have a Gatso on the other side of the road.

Don't know if it's the same situation but I ripped through a gatso at 120+MPH (Meters Per hour) on the opposite side of the road whilst overtaking and it didn't go off !!!

Theoretically you CAN get done by a gatso from the other side of the road IF there are road markings on your side. However, even if there are markings, they commonly don't bother and only go for people driving on the side of the camera.

Quick story for you !
I overtook a S2000 going through a camera.
He whacked on the brakes from 50 (limit was 40 and use to be 60 - no reason to lower it other than make money before you start) and slowed to 30.
I never lifted - just cruised around him
Next set of light his window came down "excuse me - Have you got one of thoses detector things"
My reply left him at the lights thinking while I trundled off on green..................................

Only if there are calibration markings on the road I would guess - pass one each day - sometimes it goes off sometimes it doesnt. No tickets

Your detector should go off if the GATSO is working, whether its on your side of the road or not !!

I don't think so - Got clocked at -135 MPH in a (+)60 zone outside Dublin. Got warned on a later visit that the Garda had my number and were looking out for me.

(That said - I got let off 109 MPH on the N2 cos the guy said he 'couldn't be arsed doing the paperwork and my bike was well capable of coping with those speeds' )

Not sure if english traffic branch would take a similar view

Well, there are a few cameras round my old home town, all forward facing GATSOS and I would quite happily set them off when they were facing me and never got a ticket. However, if they were TruVelo cameras, (forward facing) hmm, not so sure about them, but I guess the principle is the same.

I used to work for SERCo, a maintenance contractor for GATSO.
The flash in your face is only a warning flash to make you slow down.
Also though, radar detectors will not pick up all GATSO`s, because lots are loop operated. ie, cut into the road and work on pressure when you drive over them. like automatic exit barriers etc.
