I see pressure groups, The Gov and some breweries are thinking of trying to impose a total ban on smoking in public places. I can see the logic behind it ie passive smoking etc but isnt this smack a little of big brother again.

Personally I would like to see it as I dont smoke any more but do think it a little unfair on those that do choose to enjoy a smoke.

I too am an ex smoker but would like to see it banned in smaller public places where there is no ventilation.

If somwewhere is very well vented then it should not really pose a problem .

Obvious dilemma - who's definition of "very well vented" do we use?

New York now have a blamket ban, as many will know. Some businesses have suffered, others have prospered. Assume anywhere in the UK which tries this will see similar consequences.

Blamket? And a ban on smoking that is, not blankets. That would be a bit cruel to the homeless!

Yes. Let them smoke in thier homes. And add another £5 tax per packet so the NHS can get some more cash when they have to try and cure the smokers

when in the US it totally amazed me to go on a bar crawl, and at the end of the night come back and you could still smell your aftershave. Infact, hardly saw many smokers out there all.

My preference is to ban it, but these folks do need somewhere to go - so I propose segregated areas with a big wall in between /loads of extraction fans and separate toilets - nothing worse than that someone smoking in an enclosed space.

Wonder when the first defender will post their views. This could be a really good/interesting thread.

Exclamation

The last one wasn't Marky-san.

It just descends into a tit for tat, with the Freedom of Civil Liberties and Go Somewhere Else if You Don't Like It band on the one side, and the Don't Give Me Lung Cancer and Why *Should* I Have to Go Somewhere Else band on the other.

Can't see why this thread will prove to be any different....

I smoke and yes I would like to be able to smoke in public but I also understand peoples views on passive smoking, but rather than a total ban Surely smoking and non smoking places should be available so non smokers and smokers can choose?

No pro-smoking views because they're all in the pubs / bars 'toking away.

Personally, as a non-smoker (okay, I have the occasional cigar at Xmas and spliff when in Holland), I reckon the public areas such as bars, should have a 50:50 split on smoking and non-smoking. Afterall, these places are frequented by people out of choice, not necessitation (sp? - is there such a word?) At present, the situation favours the smoker, which isn't fair.

However, until such a time that smoking is declared illegal, then society cannot enforce a blanket ban on it, otherwise it could be deemed anti-smok(ist), which judging by numbers involved, would create a bigger outcry than any sexist / racist adjudication currently in force.

the reason why smoking will never be fully banned....cos the nhs would probably collapse as smokers pay most tax!so, if they ban smoking, what will be heavily taxed? I smoke, however, i don't smoke in a restaraunt or where there are small children around or even where i notice that noone else has sparked up. I don't even smoke in the scoob. What p1sses me off is people who just come round to ya house, to a party or whatever and just spark up without even asking if it's ok!!!! that's all from me!

Stephen - sorry for your loss
To all the people out there that smoke - do you have kids - do you want them to end up visiting you in hospital with tears in their eyes pleading "mum/dad", please don't die.
But of course, it will never happen to you - cause your f**kin special.
selfish, selfish people.

this is one of the best comments i've seen during the many debates i've seen on this subject !! and i agree there should be designated places for smokers and non smokers !! smokers can go outside

I am in my early thirties and already lost both my parents to smoking related illness' as far as i'm concerned it should be banned everywhere except in your own home.My parents knew the risks of it but still did it my mum quit a few years before she died but the damage was done, if people choose to smoke thats their choice but the should keep it to themselves

It WILL happen.

When I was a smoker and in LA it was quite easy to manage - but then I guess the weather was nicer on the patio. Very sociable area too - easier to pull over a ***

Been off them for 10 months now, so it would be easy to say BAN IT. That's what I want actually - the less I see them, the less chance I'll ever start again. With doing something so manky in poorly ventilated areas, personal liberty shouldnt come into it really. Easy for mr to say now of course..

It WILL happen though...

Thing I really hate now is after getting home from the pub I stink of smoke and wash my clothes straight away(wife does anyway). Before though when I smoked I never ever noticed just how smelly I was and wouldnt hve cared anyway.

Non Smoker, Dont like Smoking. But only ban it where its going to affect me. I.e. in a Restaurant,Near children etc.

Dunno about Pubs as I dont go to many. In public? dont make me laugh. The Civil Libertiy lot will have a field day. Can see their point though.
