Just got my PIRANHAS
#1
Just been and got my 4 Red bellied Pirhanas. They are great. Very shy though and are currently hiding behind some plants.
Anyone know how long it will take them to settle down and be ready to eat?

I'm not an expert on aquarium fish, but it will take a few weeks for those critters to get used to water conditions / landscape / light / temperatures.
Individual fish can be quite different, and maybe some of the guys will be out in the open earlier than the others.
Meanwhile, take a close look at them every day, even piranhas get sick, they are just fish remember, so monitor water quality/temp etc...
My fish have teeth as well, I'm just glad they are residing deep down in their throat somewhere

Why do you want to eat them? I've heard they're not that tasty

Have you checked your water parameters yet? Hopefully you should be on 0 ammonia and nitrite. What temp have you got them at?
Light on or off?
Assuming the water parameters are all ok, temp at about 81 faranheit they should settle in less than a week. Leave the light off for a while, it will make them feel more secure.
How big are they? If they are very small they will start eating sooner due to neccessity.

couple more things while I remember...
Have you tried to feed them yet?... if they are v. young babies they will probably eat almost straight away
Always turn the tank light off at night.... strange as it may seem piranhas go into a "sleep mode" where they float motionless almost in a trance. It takes them a while to fully come out of it in the morning, so try and turn on lights gradually in the morning. I open the curtains, then turn on the room lights for a while, then turn on the tank light when they are moving around.
enjoy!

Doubt four piranhas on there own will ever be vicous. They tend to only be nasty in large shouls. If they're little tiddlers one of the best foods to use to grow them on is coley, which is nice 'cause frozen it's cheap as chips in supermarkets.
If you want a nasty fish you real want snakeheads...
When i worked in a fish house i heard a tail of a 4ft red snake head going through the end of a tank after it's keepers cat!!!

AJM.. we are doing a water change today, the Ph is a little high at 7.6 which we are going to address, water temp is at 81 (28)and the fish are 3-4"long.
Tried to feed them white fish yesterday but no joy and we have removed the feed out of the tank.
One fish appears to be really lethargic and keeps trying to lay under the bogwood, giving the appearence of it being dead, but as soon as we move him he swims normally. And another appears not to shoal with the other three.
Any hints there?

Well ther water change is done and all the levels are as they should be.
They are indeed waking up a bit now.
Just sent the wife off to the fish shop for a few guppies as live bait to et them going.
I'll let you know what happens.
