..For New Labour.

here

This is the first opportunity the public have had to make their feelings about this government's recent activities known, and they have taken it in spades.

Great news.

As usual with by-elections, the populus has made a demonstration vote against labour, but will no doubt vote for them again come General Election time...

The 29% swing from Labour to the Liberal Democrats is the largest for almost a decade, and is being described by commentators as one of the most stunning turnarounds in British electoral history.
I think this is more than yer normal 'protest vote' - hope so anyway.

I also hope so.

I can't think of one single thing that's improved whilst they have been in government.

Health, education, law and order, tax, asylum, integrity of polititions? Nope, none of them.

That's my point. There is no credible alternative, so people will vote them in again...

Well, one thing at a time. I reckon as things pan out over the next 18 months the Tory's (even under IDS) could be on for a comeback. Just have to see how it goes. BTW, I never thought I would find myself advocating *that*, but Blair's increasingly insane, out of control and out of touch government have got to go asap.

I hope so too UB, but 36% turnout says it all. But does anyone really want the Lib Dems, after all they say they will put up taxes.

Unhappy

However, with a turnout of 36.4%, senior Labour figures say many of the party's supporters simply did not vote.

"many of the party's supporters simply did not vote."

probaby true, though it should read:

"many of the party's former supporters simply did not vote."

BTW I'm not suggesting that Lib Dems could be a credible alternative in Government.

Voting apathy is a possiblity - I can see the council housed / benefit bleeding scum re-electing Bliar as they get an easy ride under Labore (spelt incorrectly on purpose!)
