I just cant understand why the RNLI have to raise all of their money through charity donations.
Doesnt make sense really. We have a fishing fleet that employs 14500 on 7000 vessels yet the Gov provides nothing to protect them.
To run the RNLI costs £290,000 every single day which is £107m year.
I just wonder what would happen if those donations stopped.
Maybe the lottery should fund it 100%. After all it would be giving money to a worthy cause for a change instead of some stupid ethnic minority or gay group.
Chip.

i agree , it needs funding by the govt , but i'll tell you one thing they are NOT skint by a long way !! , not that it was implied, and a lot goes into fund raising and i applaud that ! but the money that they waste you would not believe ! where i live they are spending 1.2 million pounds building a new boat house that even the town council recognises is in the wrong place. it was supposed to cost 1 million but they cocked up the foundations ,and it added the extra 200,000 , another 4 million pounds is being spent on a new boathouse in s.wales , the estimate was 2 million but whats another couple of mill here and there ?? its a good cause saves lives and they are good men , but its needs new management in my view !!

A few years ago the RNLI had a very healthy balance in their accounts, something like 2.5 years worth. Well, that is what our local MP quoted. He compared the cost of running the service against the amount of cash in the bank. The moron of course didn't take into account capital costs like rebuilding stations, buying new boats, replacing damaged or sunk rescue boats etc.
RNLI, Air Ambulance, Mountain Rescue (well most of them), Cave and Cliff Rescue all funded via donations. Very poor state of affairs, I must agree.
I support my old mountain rescue team and my local air ambulance service each year, one via a donation, the other via a donation and some volutary work. Worthy causes I believe. RNLI are of course no less worthy but you can only do so much.
Cheers

And, why arent the Health service, Schools, Transport, and pretty much every service in the UK funded properly???
Makes you wonder where our money goes. Tony and Gordon seem to be well enough off.

RNLI - I always try & buy somefink off their stalls they have at the seaside - they have a small pamphlet with the work they do in, and some of the pics they have in it as thy have arrived on scene makes you think! I bet the poor buggers standing on a yacht waist deep in the ocean were pretty damn glad to see them!

This is quoted from the RNLI website.
The coastguard co-ordinates the rescue and calls on the best resource for the situation. When you call 999 and ask for the coastguard, they then decide if the RNLI, the RAF, cliff rescue etc, or indeed everyone should be sent to the incident.

As a voluntary organisation run on voluntary contributions, the RNLI goes about its business with the co-operation,
but not the control, of government. The RNLI had a small government grant from 1854-69 but
voluntary contributions dropped and the grant was stopped at the Institution’s request.
The RNLI, a service of dedicated volunteers, believes in relying on voluntary giving, which has proved reliable. It
thereby remains free from political pressures and spending cuts which could close lifeboat stations (this has
happened in other countries).

Jason, that story is from 2001.
The RNLI has lost a large chunk of that on the stock market.
OK hindsight is 20-20 and all that, but I don't think it's ever right to ever 'gamble' with donations.

Not much call from the RNLI in Milton Keynes - scrap em
Seriously - the RNLI peeps are very brave individuals, however just to lighten the mood - one chap I know got a bravery medal for rescuing someone whilst he was absolutely hammered - he was in the pub next-door to the boathouse and was first on the boat.. damned thing was he still can't remember the event that earned him the medal LOL

Can't see how we can expect a government which has no interest in the welfare of the people to actually help to fund a lifesaving organisation. They would have shut it down by now anyway. We are lucky to have the RNLI.

But we have a Coastguard as well, don't we? How are the two inter-related?
The truth is that the RNLI has become so self-sufficient that the government don't see the justification to add any additional funding although they should stump up something.
That's the trouble with having a Jocko chancellor - short arms, deep sporran.......
