Isn't "mamorial" spelt "mammorial"? Must have been a wonderful sight seeing a magnificent pair flying overhead.LOL

Damn missed them. I like to try to keep abreast of their movements whenever possible. They are a beautiful sight to see in formation doing their thing. I love to watch them as they gracefully move about performing gentle turns and manouvers apparently ree from gravity, gently cuising down the flightline for everyone to see.
Does my old heart good. I believe they are based at Conningsby and it is possible to go have have a look at them. Sometimes the mechanics are there working on them or giving them a polish with an oily rag which is always worth a watch. I know of people who have been there on a quiet day and been allowed up close and run their hands over the sleek shapes...
Don't you just hate the fact that you cannot edit the thread title, has caught me out more times than i care to mention.

The flight stayed over RAF Northolt a few years back, parked the spit and the hurricane outside the fire section, lucky for me I was on shift that evening and had the pleasure of marshalling these girls to there slots
Sometimes I wonder why I ever left the RAF? Oh yeh, could never buy a STI 5 on a RAF Fire Fighter wage
Paul
Any other EX RAF on here?

LOL at the thread title
We see them flying over a fair bit - especially if they are involved with a flypast in London, as they follow the River Lee into central London , which passes very close to us.

I always has and will fascinate me that a generation of this country and commonwealths youth went to war in these machines. I have a particular interest in ariel warfare and have done since boyhood.
If you want to read the truth behind the terror and heroism of the era read The Nuremberg Raid 30/31 March 1944. This basically and in detail with first hand accounts tells the story of the worst raid in Bomber Comands war. 97 Arcraft were lost on one night.
Take into account that this is more aircrew lost on one night than in all the Battle of Britain.

I was at the Melton Show last year. We took a tour of the church tower and while we were up there the flight went by. They seems so low you could touch them. we had a great view as the flew over and then went around for another fly by. Nothing like the sound of the engines.........

The reason why you'll see them in Lincolnshire alot is because the BofB flight are stationed at RAF Conningsby, over by Woodhall Spa. I see them regularly when at my parents house in the north of the county. Plus we see the Red Arrows too, as they use the airspace north of Lincoln near RAF Scampton where they used to be based, to practice their display.

'First Light' by Geoffrey Wellum is a good read. He joins the RAF straight from school, to become a Spitfire pilot just in time for the Battle of Britain. It's difficult to believe just how young these men were

In answer to original post. They were due over Henlow, just south of Biggleswade (no pun intended) on the 17th.
Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
My father was stationed at Coningsby when he retired & bought a house in Tattershall.Where he could watch them almost daily in the summer flying over & think back to his time as a navigator in those dark days of the 1940's.
There is a cracking museum at East Kirkby that has a restored Lanc (not airworty - yet) set up by two farmer brothers,Fred & Harold Panton who lost their youngest brother on the night of the Nuremburg raid.
MUSEUM
This museum is dear to us as my father donated several items to it.One of which is on display in the main building where you enter the museum. It is a framed collection of the original log & chart(plot) for the raid writen up by my father for his Lancaster that night. This was his 20th operational sortie & 7 out of 26 aircraft from his 101 Squadron did not return.
He was only 20 at the time.I really do not know how they did it night after night.Respect.

Colin YHM & it should have got through this time.
Another good book is "NO MOON TONIGHT" by DON CHARLWOOD.It really gives a feel of what it was like going on a raid.
