IIRC 808 State is what you are thinking of. It was also used in Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. I remember that it was in the sound sample library for the Ensoniq Mirage sampler if anyone remembers that, so it got used in loads of things.

Warning, pedantry alert!
"Dub be good to me" was a reworking of the song "Just be good to me" by the SOS Band from somewhere around 1984.
Peter Gabriel I believe contributed that and many other samples to various sample libraries around the musical world via his pioneering use of the Fairlight and other similar groundbreaking instruments in the early 80's. 808 State probably used it from one of these.
As to the original question - haven't a clue as I haven't (consciously ) heard the song you are all talking about - is there a sample on the net anywhere?
tiggers.

At the very beginning there's a sort of flute sound, which is *exactly* the same as on some 80's hit. It's been on the tip of my tongue now for days, but can somebody please put me out of my misery and tell me which song it is i'm thiking of?
Cheers!

Hold on, hold on. Who did "Just Be Good To Me"...??? For some reason that song's banging away in my head now. How did that start? On the song i'm thinking of, this flute bit is right at the beginning too - it's soooo distinctive!

u probably know Pretty Green Eye's as it was released at the height of the hardcore days circa 95 or so, the Ultra Beat version is just reworked with a trancey sound much like Shooting Star, Field Of Dreams and 4 o'clock in the Morning

One of the blokes from that band was educated in Music Technology in the college I work at. Not a lot of people know that
The flute sound was also on another dance record called 'Every Day', artists name escapes at present. You wanted 80s though so its probably not that.
You could do a lot worse that ask here - http://www.pianoheaven.net/forum/for...?s=&forumid=40

Dont think its been sampled, just think its a generic flute/pan pipe sound, beleive me if I had heard it before I would have got it, to me it is reminicsent of
Enya
Clannad
Pacific by 808 State (abit to wistful for that maybe)
Incidental music from Robin Hood Prince of Theives or Braveheart or similar
Definitely as somebody said Sadness by Enigma, all their tracks sound like that !
Anybody remember a game called 'Shadow of the Beast' on the Amiga, it remeinded me of that as well

J4CKO - "flute/pan pipe sound, beleive me if I had heard it before I would have got it"
As I said before, that *specific* sound was from the Ensoniq Mirage sampling keyboard 'factory' library. It's a bit of an 'Old Skool' icon, hence the Ultrabeat 'nod' in their OS cover.
<sorry for all the '' stuff>
