Why are we such an embarrassment

Aston Martin and the new DB9
Front cover of this weeks Autocar
Front cover of this months Top Gear
Looks like they’re on the point of making a real step change in the business
And yet the third item on the news last night was reporting on the workers in the Aston factory going out on strike.
FFS WE AS A COUNTRY DO NOT DESERVE TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH MORONS LIKE THIS UNDERMINING EVERYONES CONFIDENCE IN OUR COMMERCIAL CREDIBILITY.
There’s another thread on the go about call centres being out-sourced to India…..
Hardly a surprise is it.
BA are on the verge of financial ruin and the check-in staff at Heathrow pull the genius stroke of walking out over the introduction of smart card technology.
Is it any wonder we’re not building ships, or cars, or mining coal or etc etc
I like Aston Martins, I like their Britishness, I like what they stand for.
But I would just shut the gates of the factory and go home rather than let half-wits who are out on strike back into their jobs.
(sorry that’s quite a lot of bile for a Friday afternoon!)

in a few years time there will be no manufacturing in this country at all. Unless the government gets up and sorts it out very soon.
It is physically impossible to compete with overseas manufacturers.

Not just us though. How often are the flights to Europe delayed by striking Air Traffic Control people in Spain / France?
Plus, at least when we strike, in general it is done peacefully... not like we blockade roads and burn sheep!

I'm sad to say that alcazar has a point, IDS is hardly Mr Charisma and it will lose the tories votes.
However, voter apathy has helped new Labour a lot at the last 2 elections. It WILL not this time

Don't blame the government.
Surely we have a collective responsibility for this mess.
Aston Martin isn't government owned or run it's a free market commercial operation.
Take responsibility for your actions.
That includes the cross you put in the box that elects your government but don't think that absolves you of responsibility for the rest of the mess.

Come on, manufacturing in the UK has been screwed ever since the 70s, I'm no New Labour supporter but the blame cannot be squarely aimed at them. It's had decades of decline under both Conservative and Labour governments (mostly Conservative) and a change in Government is NOT going to fix it.
Call it capitalism, free enterprise, globalisation or whatever: business ultimately goes where the cost base is lowest for the skills & services they require. The UK cost base for most manufacturing jobs is too high.
