Does anyone know anything about Squirrels?
We found one yesterday that decided it wanted to live in our loft.
Obvioulsy this is not good for us.
Do you know if they have young at this time of year as this one keeps returning to the nest that we have now blocked up.
It's only a grey squirrel so we're not breaking the law evicting the little bugger!
The amusing bit so far was when I first went up the ladder and tapped the roof. The squirrel thinking it could fly decided to bolt out of its nest and jump from 50 foot up. The daft thing only goes and hits the concrete with a loud thud!
Must be nuts!

Go to your local pet shop, get some sawdust from where they house weasels / stoats. Sprinkle that round the loft. You won't have any more squirrels! They're terrified of weasels.

That's a bit harsh. Squirrels are not that detrimental to society.
But should you wish to take that action, there is an airgun thread kicking around somewhere....
Steve.

boxst, I was surprised by this as well. My gf used to work at a large pest control company, and this is the sdvise they used to give out if anyone caught a rat, squirrel or other animal classed as vermin. I believe you can be fined for releasing vermin..

You certainly don't want them in your loft as apparently they have an appetite for electrical wiring. I sometimes get woken up by them on the roof - think they must tap dance with steel toe-cap boots. What a bloody racket.

Don't they hibernate in winter? Props looking for somewhere to kip down over the cold months. We have a Hazel tree at the bottom of our garden and a squirrel is furiously harvesting the nuts for his winter stash ATM.

You asked about their breeding cycle. I know very little about them, but I got this from a web site...
Reproduction:
December to January and then again May to June.
The litter size can be 1-5
She can have 1-2 litters per year.
The life span of the female is between 4-6 years.
The life span of the male is between 2-3 years.
Mortality rate is about 75% per annum.
More details here.

Grey are vermin introduced from the states.
Reds are protected are the only squirrel that was native to the UK.
Greys do cause a fair bit of damage actually and are up there with the rat, pigeon and gulls (20 miles from the sea) for things that should be removed!

Our dog is currently have a battle of wits with his arch nemisis
The bloody squirrel trys to creep right up to him, daring our retriever to chase him. He then legs it up the nearest tree where he sits on the first set of branches and then proceeds to "bark" at the dog. Well that's what it sounds like!
Funny as hell, and great entertainment while your eating you're breakfast

Squirrel is no more.... After waiting for it to return to the roof I popped a shot at it which missed. The bugger then vanished. After 5 mins it's down the bottom of the garden lurking in the trees.
Obviously it wasn't too clever at hiding as I popped a pellet in the little ****er and it fell out of the tree.
On further examination I'd shot it in the head.

Grey Squirrels are an unwelcome invader. They cause very heavy damage in forests. They are driving our native squirrel to extinction. They do not live and let live. If they weren't cute they wouldn't get any sympathy at all. Kill them. Kill them all.

they're just a rat with a bushy tail at the end of the day.
Will be keeping an eye out on our loft after this - we seem to have a particularly neigbourly squirrel around and the cats (9 of them around us) still haven't got the bugger!
