Electric Garage Doors
#1
I have decided (because I have a need to spend money) that when I move house (not long now) that I will put an electric door on my garage because its a 3 car garage and I figured I really should put my car in the garage like the insurance says. (can never be bothered to get out and unlock it)
Plus I think it will look cool because its got quite a long drive and I will just be able to speed in. (lol how sad)
So are they worth it and how much they cost?
Thanks

Definately worth it, especially when its peeing down with rain which it does a lot of Wales.
As for cost I got an insulated panel door by Hormann as I ve got a room over the garage.
Security is much better with these doors as well.
Cost is about £850 for a good door like this though I paid trade price.
Somne doors are more expensive ,others are not. Like with most things you get what you pay for.

Electric all the way, I have had 2 14ftx7ft automated doors for 12 years with no problems. I had power operated gates fitted at the end of drive too at the same time, also with no problems.
Well worth the cost in my opinion.

GTI,
sounds to me like the one you want is a Wayne-Dalton, they are excellent, if a little bulkier than the roller type, but I prefer them.

You should be able to find what you're after there!

Never fitted a roller, but did loads of sectional ones, the mechanism is visable, which make it easier to maitain, but, you do have to have tracks coming out into the garage, which you don't get with the roller option!

Go for the Roller version as you only lose a 300m x 300mm space above the door, all that extra space and no tracks on the ceiling to get in the way. I would have to say that people I have spoken to have said they have no trouble at all with the roller doors.
As for looking after them there is not much to do, apart from checking that there is no dirt in the guide rail brushes - apart from that there is no oiling or greasing to do (or get on your clothes!!)
As for sectional doors the ones I know, unless it's operated on a electric motor, you can trap your fingers inbetween the sections. I have seen someone do it & it's not nice
They also do a wood effect one that looks good as well

Doesn't the roller type have to be an option before the garage is built.
I seem to remember retro-fitting a roller door on a domestic garage wasn't worth the hassle.
Any one?

Na it's a piece of pish you just get the door made to fit you opening you have even if you haven't got a great deal of height above the door it can still be fitted as it takes up hardly any room at all or you can have the 300mm x 300mm box outside no problem at all.
What do you mean a sectional one fills the void?
Our one has seals all round to keep the wind out.

GTi,
This is what I do ..... I would go with Novoferm.
The sectional are the BEST ..... Roller shutters are okay if you have restrictions in the garage, as they fit in a box above the door opening, but for quality, I would always suggest a sectional.
If you need any specific advice, you can mail me offline, or call me on 01268 741717 , and I am in the local Yellow pages (well , local to me !!)
Nate.

Not Bad but look at all the Stuff you have to have on the wall and ceiling and the cost, for my garage in insulated version and the bits that I have would be about £1800 plus the extra for having it Blue.
Nope I still think the roller is more value for money @ £1400 for the size of our garage but we paid less than that for it just got cheaky asking for some discount
We have a small gap at the top on the outside of the shutter but can't say we have noticed a force 10 gale coming into the garage from the top of the door as there is only a small gap on the inside but I have a Brush strip to fit on the inside but not got round to it yet

What about electric up and over doors?
About £350 for our Hormann Supra-Matic up 'n' over lifter on our existing Henderson steel double door.
It's self learning (slows to open and closed position) and has a safety cut out so it doesn't squish anything
Toothed belt too, so it's nice and quiet.
