Just wondering
I'm currently in the Royal Artillery (T.A.), hoping to join the Royal Marines next year when I get made redundant from my current job.

I wanted to join the Marines when i was younger, went to a recruiting office (they still about?) but walked into the Army one and stated that i was there to join the Marines.
I was very politely told to try the Navy one down the road, Doh!
I think he'd phoned ahead to his mate in the Navy office as well.

Was a Royal Marine, just finished my compulsory reserve.
Go for it - one of the best things I ever did. Although getting out was also one of the best things I ever did...
SB
Edit for an alarmingly freudian typo!

Spent 2 years in South African Infantry from January 1989 - January 1991.
Two of the best years of my life, saw a great country, met some good people and captured a few ANC terrorists on the Mozambique border.
National service in the uk would work wonders with some of the slob youths that litter our society!
Skoosh.

Well I cant speak for the people above, but of all the people Ive ever met who were (or are) in the Army. Virtually none of them come out socially acceptable!
I guess they're taught that they only need the Army, that its their family now and "outsiders" are to be looked down on. The majority (terrible term I know) are either incapabale of wiping their posterior or are of the bark orders type. (Just ask me, dont order me to do something or threaten to "take me out the back and give me a kicking" FFS!!!!) I also hear that once you've informed the superiors of your intent to leave, there is a mild form of bullying to the point that you made to feel guilty. That you are abandoning your comrades. Thus, I dont think many people get any real form of help and advice for rejoining the regular world and sorting out housing or another job.
Its sad that ex soldiers are viewed as a tool thats out lived its purpose and should be thrown on the scrapheap.
I used to be a fan of the Armed Forces, but the way it "adjusts" the people means Im not so keen anymore! I have a ex friend in the Artillery, and she changed completely from the person she used to be. (hence the Ex part) She is (was) due to leave early next year, but I will place money on it that she wont now. As slowly shes been moulded into the type of person I describe above!
Its very sad.

WTF are you taking about !
Firstly I think you are steroetyping all the military as a bunch of thick muppets, brainwashed to just shout and shoot people. Fair enough some are, but i think you'll find a vast amount are far more intelligent, motivated and switched on than you think.
I also think you'll be suprised to know that many leave the armed forces to get paid more for the job/career that they've been trained in, those that decide to stay in do so because they arent as fortunate to have a civillian recognised skill yet and are advised to stay in or they realise that 9 times out of 10 they get paid loads for doing little, but at the end of the day no one is bullied into staying in.
FWIW with my current qulifications I could leave the army tomorrow and get double my salary for doing the same job, and no one would bully me into doing different.
I certainly dont look down on any of my civillian counterparts/friends or family! When i leave work and change from green to civillain clothing i become and act like a civillian and i think my friends/family would vouch for this, half of them don't even know i'm in the forces.
I think you've either been misled or havn't met enough soldiers/sailors etc

chris (in the forces and happy with it)

Im glad you're happy in the Army. And I did make the point that I cant speak for everone. But in MY experience of the 30 or so soldiers Ive EVER met. (Maybe not enough but they are all relatively young and dare I say it impressionable) Those are my views. Im not having a specific dig at you.
