Question

Anyone know of a good company that can supply and install an electric garage door opener?

I have a double garage with a pair of single width up-and-over doors, and I need the electric opener to be able to connect to an external relay contact provided by my house alarm.

B&Q do superb kits and they aren't difficult to fit.

They come with a remote outside keypad too as well as the car remote.

I have 2 14x7 metal doors and one was automated by the garage door installers at a stupid cost 12 years ago compared to the B&Q kit which is also much better and was installed 6 years ago.

Spoon,

didn't read your post properly ....... If you fit the GDO's to a single door(and canopy, with a spring across the top) , they don't work well!!

can canopy type doors with a spring across the top that stick out a bit when open be motorised or do you need to replace the door with a retractable one ??.

I have seen adaptor arms for canopy doors but do they work ok ??.

Pbee- My doors are both canopy 14ftx7ft each.

They both run along 2 horizontal rods just below ceiling height with the motor sitting in between these rods.

My springs stand vertically though, either side of the door fixed to the wall.

sorry i may of misunderstood.

do you have 1 opener that opens both garage doors ??.

sorry just reread the earlier post you have 2 different units.

How noisy is the B & Q unit compared to the other one you have it looks the same as the one from screwfix.

was also looking at these but for 2 plus additional remotes its £950

Autoglide

Pbee- Both units look very similar except the B&Q unit imo is better by a big margin.

Bearing in mind when you have an expert company fit the recommended kit you will think, like me, that nothing B&Q sell will come close.

I as good as said this to the guy at the store who was willing to bet me that I was wrong. I bought the largest kit as the doors are big, and it's excellent.

It's smoother, quiet and it comes with a remote outdoor keypad all for I think, about £120.

The recommended kit I think cost about £600 fitted, 12 years ago.

Spoon ,

Your door sounds as if it is a retractable ....... Canopy doors have a spring go across the width of the garage door fitted to the head timber.

Look here to compare operating gear

Pbee, I charge £350 + VAT (£411.25)for GDO's with two handsets and internal wall mounted control panel. The price you have been quoted, what make is that for?

Edited to say , sorry pbee didn't click your link .... Don't touch those autoglides with a 10' barge pole ..... last approx 5 years and the tape drive they run on snaps .... Then it's a new system because the parts are so expensive !!!! BEWARE

Nate.

You don't get much better garage doors than these people Novoferm.

All doors come with a 10 year guarantee on parts labour and workmanship. And the prices are not horrendous either.

Nate- They are Garadors with the same configuration as diagram 2 only they don't totally retract so a canopy is left.

Pbee- Nate obviously knows his stuff if it's his living but even without his advice on those Autoglide jobbies I reckon i would steer clear of them.

They look very cheap and nasty indeed.

As Nate confirms, they must be.

Probably the equivalant of doing a bungee jump with an elastic band.

thick question here

Up and over doors, i take it motor can be connected to these, esp the b&q jobbies. Im in the market for a garage and this seems a useful bit of kit. BTW any quotes on a circa 18ft wide single opening garage door 18 ft length, please mail me lol

Nate should know but I think 14ft was the biggest they do/did for domestic applications.

Sizes ........ Wessex do a steel door standard 16' x 7' (not the best make) , Henderson do a made to measure door to 16' x 7' (a lot better than Wessex) ...... And Novoferm do a 45mm thick insulated sectional garage door up to 18' wide (for whom I am an approved installer for).

For the benefit of the uninitiated, what exactly do you mean by 'not very good'? Are they unreliable? Noisy? Worse?

I have two doors to automate, so the cost is a big deal - I've seen some pretty horrendous quotes for professionally installed systems. What am I getting for the money?

Where are you located anyway? I'm geographically challenged and there are lots of Southends on www.streetmap.co.uk

Thumbs up

'not very good' , meaning that in some way or another they either don't lend themselves to a lot of use or are very light in construction eg the georgian door Wickes currently sells, twists easily. As a rule the doors home improvement centres sell are about the bottom of the quality ladder , hence the low price, I have seen many wickes doors needing repairing after 6- 12 months .... But sometimes that is through lack of professional installation.

Saying that , the Motorlift operator mentioned earlier is actually made by a company called Chamberlain ...... A reputed american company ...... Which is the main operators I use by choice ..... Do steer clear of an operator made by 'Einhell' which sells through the Makro chain , it has no force adjustment settings and the motor inside the casing is about the size of a D cell battery !!

What you get for your money is 'usually' that a reputable company has fitted a door/operator numerous times before , and so you are getting their knowledge of installing and cutting the risks of failure due to ill-fitting.

Nate.

iva just had a quote from compton for a garage flat spar double 17' wide by 18'2 long for £4000. This is with door at the back and no electric openers, delivered and erection. Nate do you know any1 that does garages themselves? I have to have one wide door because of access restrictions, does this sound a good price, im not worried how pretty it looks just want a cheapo garage.

When you consider a cheap 14' wide door would cost around £1000 - £1200 .... That is not a bad price ( if that includes the concrete base? ).... Also, I have dismantled a sectional garage before ... Not again though, it is very hard work .... I would say that Compton is your best choice re complete garage , but if later you want it automated ,I would ask them which garage is going to give you the clearance above the door when open to fit one , best get the right one in the first place.
