Saddam Hussein's two sons may have been captured or killed in a shoot-out in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, reports say.
There was a "pretty decent chance" Uday and Qusay were inside a villa raided by 200 US troops, an American official said.
Local residents claimed to have seen the pair in the house earlier in the day.
Four people are believed to have been killed during the seven-hour operation.
The US military says a number were also arrested. They were said to include a local tribal leader and his son.
Lieutenant Colonel William Bishop, of the 101st Airborne Division, said:
"This morning we went to the building and surrounded it, and detained several high-interest personalities."
Witnesses say the soldiers were fired at as they approached the house and called in helicopter support.
The house was badly damaged in the fighting. Its roof caved in after it was apparently hit by a missile.
US forces have so far captured 34 of the 55 Iraqis on a most-wanted list of members of Saddam's regime.
But the former Iraqi dictator and his sons remain at large. They are believed to be in Iraq still.
Washington has offered a $25m reward for the capture of Saddam and $15m for Uday and Qusay.
Audio tapes said to have been made by the deposed leader have been given to Arab television networks, urging Iraqis to fight occupying US and British troops.
