South Korea has exchanged machinegun fire with communist North Korea in a rare incident that could raise the diplomatic stakes just as Pyongyang appears set to return to talks on its nuclear ambitions.

Apparently the North fired first with 4 shots at a tower in the DMZ. The South fired back with 17 shots and that was the end of it. The Americans have kept their mouths shut for once lol. Best they do and leave it at that as don't need them making a mountain out of a mole hill and causing the Koreans to start proper engagements.
4 and 17 shots respectively with no one hit is hardly anything for the Americans to get excited over.

It may be a rare event these days, but up till recent it was an everyday occurance.
IIRC North and South Korea are technically still at war. The peace talks at Pan Mung Jong (SP) only resulted in a cease fire.
