Question

Anyone know of a reliable place to buy Compact Flash cards, specifically Lexar ones,('cos my Dimage don't like the others, cheap?
I've tried one or two places, but they don't have 'em in stock. ~
I want one at 256Mb, and one at 512Mb.
Thanks,
Alcazar

I am using the Crucial cards perfectly OK in my Dimage 7i. (PS: I found the UHS mode yesterday -- after four months of wondering why the continuous shooting wasn't very fast )

I used Crucial to get my 512Mb card and they deliver very quickly and are quite cheap as well.

You also get an extra 5% off if you use the promo code BBUKWEBPROMO

I would stay well away from lexar cards for the DImage. I have the DImage Xi (or something like that... the 2meg one), and it is just *dog slow* with lexar memory...

The 8 meg panasonic card that came with it is blindingly fast. Then I made the mistake of buying the lexar card (64Mb), and saving a movie (max length) takes 1 minute and 45 seconds (!) (tested it today). My 128Mb SanDisk is slightly faster, and on my mates 128Mb Kingston card it only takes 15 seconds to save the same movie clip.

Also, it takes forever for the camera to store pics to the Lexar card.

I don't know if my lexar card is faulty, but it works fine in my sharp zaurus PDA.

My advise: Stay away from Lexar and go for either Panasonic or Kingston.

If you check out a few of the (mainly) American Digi Photo Newsgroups and Forums, you'll see there's pretty much a constant stream of grumbles about Lexar cards, both used in consumer DigiCams and Pro Digi SLRs.

Having said that, we've only got three Lexar cards, and had no probs, but then we've had no hassles with any of the 40+ (assorted brands) C/F cards we've got. Only one student on the course has had a fault, and he bought a 64mb card online for a Fiver...

We mostly buy Jessops own brand, as they're reliable and cheap due to the huge discount we get.

Cheers

7DayShop

Now I'm a big fan of them, but they supply the very same make of duff card that one of my students bought... Cheap, generic and not for those one off moments (IMHO).

Cheers

Thanks for the replies, guys.:
Does anyone know if ALL comapct flash cards can be put into a card reader that plugs into a computer's USB port, or only those which say "USB enabled"?

Shouldn't make any difference when being read in a USB CF reader.

Does this help?

Right - it only makes any difference if you buy Lexar's cheap USB reader that requires the extra circuitry in the card. If you buy any other reader, you'll be OK.

<cynic>
It's just an attempt to get you locked into buying their own cards for ages just because you saved a few quid on the reader.

Lexar make claims about their cards and readers having a faster data transfer etc etc. In the real world, I see no evidence of that. On everything from a 1.1 Athlon to a 2.0 P4, the cards take roughly the same time as Jessops/Sandisk/Nikon/Kodak etc etc CF cards.

We got our Lexar cards and reader for free from their Rep; I certainly wouldn't pay the extra for one.

Cheers
