How does the couriering business work?
#1
A colleague and I have a cunning plan. We're looking into the feasibility of a business that requires reliable next-day delivery. How late in the day can you generally get goods to a courier in time for a next-day delivery? How do 'local' firms get goods up to Scotland, say - where they have no offices? Is there a lot of room for maneuvre in their pricing?

We used to use Securicor - they would collect up to say 4pm , they got binned in the end because nearley everything that we sent to London got lost for a couple of days.
We now use city link - they will collect a bit later, maybe 5 pm - no problems so far and pleased with the service.
If its a real last minute type job we use TNT - we can drop off at their depot uptil 8pm - expensive service though, ( not the late drop off, just TNT in general )
I image we can do the same with city link but their deopt is further away.

Overnights...
Well, generally speaking & depending what town/area you're in, a 18:00 cut-off or poss 19:00 if you can help with the labelling...
What happens is that all goods are returned to local depot, labelled & pre-sorted according to area destination.
A lorry then leaves for the "trunk", generally in the midlands somepace, arrives and then the stuff is sorted into where its final depot is. The lorry from that depot that came up takes the stuff for delivery back, its sorted into "runs" & sent out with a driver to attempt delivery.
Basically...
Margins are low & are only possible through volume (3 bites of cherry - depot 1, hub/trunk & depot 2) so discounts come via mucho useage.
Any further questions you have, feel free to ask. I'm mainly SameDay but my current employers also do Overnight.
