Finally got somebody interested in buying my X-Type. He's going to fly up from Brighton (to Edinburgh) on Sunday, with the cash, and assuming the car's as good as he's expecting he'll then drive it home.
So, any tips for making sure it goes smoothly? I'm going to ask him to fax a copy of his driving licence to me as some confirmation of ID, but other than him bringing forged notes (unlikely, IMO) I can't see there's any real risk in the transaction. I'll take somebody with me for company, but is there anything else I should do in advance?

you've got a guaranteed sale... nobody travels that far and goes home empty handed.. might have to haggle the price a bit but the deal's there...
if you're worried about the validity of the money get him to hand it over in your bank and pay it straight in.. saves you having it kicking around the house for any length of time.. Getting mugged on the way to the bank..

It's definitely cash, not a bankers draft, so the only problem from my PoV is if it's forged - not likely, I reckon.
The guy's coming up on Sunday, so I won't be able to bank the cash immediately. However, even if it was forged, I'd just report the car as stolen.

marko, glad you've found a buyer at long last.
i know its not the thing to say, but i will absolutely pi55 myself laughing if i read a post entitled "What to do with a load of forged banknotes" next week....
but then again, i wouldn't wish that on anyone, well almost.

Like the idea of taking a photo.
The contract idea isn't worth it though as a) it wouldn't be legally binding anyway, unless we introduced solicitors, and b) I really don't GAS what happens to the car once I've got the cash.
Definitely keep your eye out for the "20 grand in forged bank notes" thread in the for sale section on Monday though.

1 Get him to bring his passport - my driving licence no more proves who I am than does my library card.
2 Money checking pen is a good idea
3 He will almost certainly try to haggle with you. Stand firm on the price!
4 Take a photo
What will you be driving now?

Mark,
Thats a lot of cash to be accepting in notes form
Would you know a forged £50 or £100 if you had to tell the difference? Good ones are pretty hard to spot these days.
Also, make sure you get to see and take a copy of the buyers passport and driving licence, to be sure he is who he says he is. If he won't agree to that, then tell hom no deal.
Money Laundering regs are not as stringent when it comes to private transactions between individuals, but its the classic scam.
Buy car with "dirty" cash, sell it on immediately and its clean.
Personally I wouldn't accept that much cash unless I'd seen the person draw it from the bank there and then.
reporting it stolen is a hard one, for one you willingly handed it over, so its not theft, its fraud.
Authorities won't want to know and you've got **** all chance with insurance.
Michelle's suggestion is ok in theory, but if he's dodgy, its not worth the paper its written on.
My advice, a draft and go to the bank with the buyer.

Bros2,
Driving licence should be good enough ID, assuming it's a photocard job. If you can get hold of a forged photocard licence, then you can probably get a forged passport too - and TBH, if he's got either of those forged then it's probably out of my league anyway.
I won't be haggling if I can help it, but when I spoke on the phone, listed the options/spec of the car, he said it was a very good price. So he's left himself little room for downwards movement in price.
What will I be driving? Well, at the moment I'm driving our Pug 306 (and have been for 2-3 months, 'cos the petrol consumption in the Jag is just too heavy). The plan is that at some stage (almost certainly after I get a job) the Jag will be replaced with a Landrover Defender 110 CSW, which will be cheaper to run, easier for chucking mountain-bikes in the back of, etc., better able if/when we get snow, and a bit more fun to boot if we take it off-roading up some munroes.
(PS: I thought you didn't post these days? )

And don't forget that the guy (and his dodgy mates!) will know that you'll have a fair few £000's of pounds in cash overnight until the banks open on the sunday. So hide it!
Verify his ID, ask for him to bring a bankers draft if possible (why is he paying cash? and carrying so much all the way from brighton to scotland!!!) and his passport etc. If he's genuine, he'll understand your concerns. Also make sure there's people you know around when the deal is done etc.
What is an x-type BTW? the jag I assume?

Diablo,
I'm less worried about the fraud aspect for 2 reasons.
1. Why bother flying all the way from Brighton to Edinburgh just to get hold of a car of which there must be hundreds in London? Seems a ludicrously large amount of effort for no real reason.
2. If it was just a way to launder forged cash, why pick a Jag X-Type? As I've found out, they're almost impossible to sell on at the moment. If it was me, I'd choose something easier to sell, like a Merc or a Beemer...
But, as you say, I will be cautious. Fact is, though, I'd prefer cash to a bankers' draft any day of the week.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm Tough one this!!
I would question someone travelling THAT far just to get a car they can get 10 miles from their home!!??
I had this concern over the Escort Convertible I sold - a buyer from Bangkok rang from a hotel there and bought it over the phone!! - said a mate from Liverpool would drive down south with the cash and pick it up!!!???
I had major concerns over the cash, is it forged? I asked for a bankers draft - he said no - strictly cash!! I agreed, thinking I would get them to run me round to the bank to pay in (about 500 yards away!!)
When this gorrilla turned up, threw me an envelope stuffed with notes and hooked the car onto an A frame, he didnt take too kindly to me suggesting he escort me to the bank!! I decided, for £1200, it wasnt worth the visit to hospital!! - he got some dodgy diesel out of his boot, poured it into a clapped out Sierra and off he went!!
I ran to the bank and paid it in - thinking the Impreza could catch up with them maybe?? and with armed police I may get it back!!
The bank didnt even look at the notes really, just counted them and in they went - if they WERE duff it don't matter once they have taken them in does it??!!
Good Luck - but its funny what some people will do!!
Pete

Dracoro,
He's almost certainly bringing cash so that he can take the car away immediately, rather than faff about. If he brought a bankers draft I wouldn't release the car until it'd cleared. He's coming up on a Sunday, so that would mean an overnight stay. Doesn't seem too unreasonable to me.
The X-Type is the baby Jag. See www.x-type.org

I don't!
But having been in a similar position a few months back (in reverse) I thought my two penn'orth might be of use.
For me, it was much easier getting cash out of the bank than a draft - ring them, tell them you want a lot of notes, pick it up a few hours later. A draft takes longer, then there's the issue of people worrying over whether it's forged. My seller refused to take a danker's draft unless I went to the bank to deposit it with him. Since we were meeting at 7.00am, that wasn't really a runner!
I take it the guy's coming to your house? Try not to keep the cash there over the weekend, if you can possibly help it. I know it sounds paranoid, but rather safe than sorry.

The guy won't be coming to my house. I'm meeting him off the plane at the airport (I'll be taking a mate) and it's 25 miles from my place, so no point going all the way back. We'll do the deal somewhere in the terminal, probably.
I imagine there's a thread on some other BBS somewhere with a guy called Matt posting "I'm flying up to Edinburgh on Sunday, with £22k in cash, to buy a Jag. Anyone got any suggestions on how to ensure I won't get mugged and the money stolen?".
Oh, and I'll be leaving the cash at an anonymous friend's house overnight for safekeeping until I pay it into the bank on Monday, so nobody need get any ideas about paying me a visit on any Sunday night in the next few weeks.

Ask to have a photo taken with you and him shaking hands, maybe with the day's newspaper. Promise to (and do) send him a copy. If he's real, it keeps you both happy.
I'd have thought that paying 22k into your bank in cash will alert standard money laundering enquiry procedures (transactions over about 8-10k). Hope this doesn't trouble you.
What happens if you get "oh, I only brought 21.5k, is that OK?"
When I got a bank draft I phoned the bank and gave all the numbers to confirm it. Not sure you could get that on a Sunday though.
Good luck
Brendan

If he turns up with too little cash, then it'll either be a wasted journey, or we'll pop to the cashpoint up the road.
As for money-laundering checks, I'm used to them having worked in the banking industry. But I've got 3 current accounts, two savings accounts, 4 empty credit cards and two business bank accounts, so spreading the cash out to hide it shouldn't be too hard.

I sold my Accord to a bloke who flew up from London to Edinburgh with 11 grand in cash. Picked him up at the airport, he had a quick shot back to my house to do the documents, then buggered off. Job done.
The money laundering questions are a bit pointless at the bank aren't they? "Where did you get the money" - "Sold me car" - "Oh alright then" - nearly as pointless as the airport questions - "Has anyone interfered with your bag?" "How the **** would I know if they'd done it properly"

What happened to that old fashioned idea of trusting people? Take the cash, get them to sign something and if he he seems like a decent dude give him a full tank of petrol as a good will gesture. D

Exactly. I've got no reason to think the guy isn't genuine, and he seems nice enough.
When he was asking about the spec of the car, he was particularly chuffed when I described the hi-fi as having 8 speakers and a sub. I can't imagine any money-laundering organised crime gangsters worrying about whether or not the car they're planning to use to launder forged notes has got a stereo that'll play banging choonage adequately.

God what a suspicious lot you are.
1.Why is he travelling so far.........maybe its EXACTLY the right spec/age/price he's after.
2.Forged notes...if he was gonna rip someone off why travel so far?Just do it in the next town........
Marko..its obvious he wants the car..to clinch the deal i'd..
1.Let him haggle a bit, everyone likes to think they've got something off, even though most retailers add it on anyway before.
2.Dont go over the top in being safe.If someone got a marker pen out to check my money i might be a bit offended, and if the deal wasnt all that i hoped i might tell you where to go.
3.Make sure there are no nasty surprises. Its excactly the car you say it is.

It wont be a lot in cash - I bought my scoob for cash - £15k in mostly £20 notes was not even enough dosh to fill a shoe box. Its damn hard to count unless you have one of those electronic counters. Take my advice and take the chap to the bank and get him to pay it in - then they can count it for you and check it is real.
Bankers drafts arent as safe as they used to be - cash is the only way to safely do such a transaction.
Like someone else said - a timewaster isnt going to come all the way up to Scotland.
If your like anyone else then you will have added your "haggling" money on top of the price you want and will be in a position to knock some money off if he pushes.
Simon.
