If somebody wants to talk to me why can't they just f**king phone me instead of sending SMS's then sulking when I don't reply. The excuse that it is cheaper is complete bollox, by the time you have sent half a dozen messages each back & forth thats over a quid, & you can have a damned long conversation for that much, even on a PAYG.

Is there a way of disabling the SMS receiver so that the sender can see that it isn't received?

Unfortunately mate, the Return Receipt function is native to the sender's phone, so you can't disable it from your end.

Hello

It's quick, it's easy and you don't have to say "pardon?" 15 times as you go through a tunnel, try to change gear or whatever it is that people so whilst they are on the phone.

Cheaper is rubbish, it is the most expensive method of communication for vast amount of data. Great for "Fancy coming to the pub?".

Me and my fella text constantly. Thats how we got together in the first place. It is cheaper for us as I have free unlimited mesasages every month and he has 700 a month free. Sad this, but my 'record' for texts in a month was 1870.

Have to say though that 2 and half years of texting has worn thin now and I do tend to pick up the phone and ring him if i'm out without him and I need to ask him something.

Well it depends on what you want to say I guess. I don't mind getting texts saying "don't forget the chicken" or something, but i don't see the point in having a text conversation

Got a sim card from BT Genie when it first started out and that was the deal. 50 minutes free anytime calls and unlimited free texts. Oh and I get free wap too. Not a bad deal for £10 a month!! Had it for 3 years now and I ain't gonna change for anything!!!!

Text messages keep me more in touch with my kids than I was ever in touch with my parents. We can say stuff we'd be slightly embarrassed to say face to face. Like everything in this world, to everything there is a season.

Cool

It's not just me then

@ Johnny50 My stepdaughter goes one better than that, she rings you once then hangs up, then later I'll get a roasting off the wife because I didn't return the call She only does it so she's not paying the bill

Bloody hell!

I'm with CrisP on this one. ALL arguments between myself and textaholic girlfriend are about text messages. It's usually to do with me not answering within 1.2 seconds, whereby she suddenly thinks I am ignoring her or have fallen out with her.

Basically I can say a HELL of a lot in 1 minute, but for me to type the same conversation on my telephone would take me an hour. It's a no brainer.

I think it's even sadder that we are breeding a generation whose grammar excludes vowels completely. You only need to read Scoobynet to see this happening.

Olly:

One of my favourite topics! The general lack of spelling and grammar in society.

And although lots of people here will say that a bulletin board (and text messages) are a casual form of communication, the use of abbreviations and "text-speak" slowly creeps into other forms of life. I have had e-mails from people that are virtually unintelligable: No paragraphs, no punctuation, no capital letters and the use of abbreviations. Nightmare.

never sent one and would never respond to one.....its bizare that the mobile phone (high point of modern science) is sold based on being able to make crap sounds (like rolf harris did on a stylophone in 1976), take crap photos (like my disposable camera from asda) and text....im sure the telegram was invented some time ago!

I find them handy for speaking to my girlfriend / mates / colleagues during the day. A single text asking if they're out tonight, coming to the gym or whatever is less intrusive IMO than a phone call.

I always use proppa English in texts though.

Very true Tiggs.

My new all singing, all dancing Nokia portable cellphone has got a calendar, a stopwatch, a To Do list (ha ha), a feature to tell me how many Mongolian groats I can get for my pound, can whistle Dixie, and has an infra red with blue teeth or something.

Is is any good at making phone calls, the one and only feature I need it for? Is it thump.

ohhh, and you can play games on them, games that would make a ZX spectrum laugh out loud!

and you can put diffent colours on them! (if you do you need a new life not a new battery cover)

they are the calculator/diary watch of the new millenium. (only they are as crap as the orange and green luminus socks from the same era!)

"like everything in this world, to everything there is a season."

gr8 m8! ecclesiastes 3:1,11.

to that i'd add " ... and a time to every purpose under the heaven."

Olly & Boxst- With you both here.

It's generally a way of communicating for the no-brainers (but not always), hence it's popularity.

This country is getting thicker and lazier by the minute.

Most people are actually scared to speak on the phone so texting is great for them.

Soon, children will be born without voice boxes and contoured text fingers.

Oh and i've never had a mobile phone set to ring in 20 years of owning them, I much prefer the discreet vibrate method.

Blimey, I wish I hadn't mentioned it on here, cheers Olly for the multiple SMS, phone is now OFF

And her is the best bit about Olly's moan, when he doesn't respond to his girlfriend's text messages, she then texts my wife to get her to ask me why Olly is ignoring her Pick up the phone & ask him, it's not difficult. WTF do you think I would do if I could be bothered

Well Holy Ghost...I was going to add that last bit about Heaven but seeing as I'm a Pagan I don't think that would have been apt. Oh and I too only use real spellings in Text messages, takes too long to figure out these short cuts !

SMS is great if you do a lot of overseas travelling - they do work out cheaper than calling. Depends where you are of course....one month in Karachi saw a bill for £680 - on text alone something mental like 30p to send and 80p to recieve. Never mind. Bad example

I also get the impression that people will say things in text messages that they would never say over the phone...
