Question

Particularly a Fujifilm 4800z, do they exist? What price are they?

I am taking a photography course soon after a few peeps encouraged me to. Was wondering of digital cameras have the same options as SLR's? I find using the digital camera cheaper than snapping away with an SLR - with digital you delete the ones you don't like.
I aim to enventually get a digital SLR. Many $$$'s away though.

Ya cheeky git, I haven't uploaded my last few sets of photos.

Ask ChrisB, he will inform you the quality of them.

That is if he doesn't whinge about the amount of "wave" piccies I send him through - I think he got a tad bored with them.

Chelle, afaik your camera does not have a filter thread the way standard slr camera's do,therefore limiting your options.I have read that Cokin do a kit for digital cameras where you get a holder and a selection of filters.

Jessops online have a filter section

I think the thing is that for basic coloured filters (e.g. orange, blue, etc.) you can just edit the pictures in Photoshop or its ilk. My camera has 'hued' digital filters that can be used when the photograph is taken.

The only ones I've really seen for digital cameras are polarizing filters. You usually need a step up or step down adapter ring to get it to fit the camera -- this is assuming you've got a digital camera with a threaded bit on it. Only trouble is that I can only find circularly polarized filters and ideally I want a linearly polarized one.

Yeah, converted to Aus $'s with postage and packaging, it isn't a pleasant prospect. I will go along the Photoshop route before considering filters....

I have got an SLR EOS Rebel 2000 with filters, I just wondered if I could get filters for the digital. I would prefer to waste time practising framing and stuff like that on the digital camera rather than waste $$$'s on film.

I have some cracking wave shots from Palm Beach as dusk is setting in on 4MB setting. I will reduce them and get the up on fotopic for viewing.

My camera is a Minolta Dimage 7i, and DOES have a filter thread, albeit 49mm. I've just bought a skylight 1a from Dixons for £3.99 for it.

alcazar -- snap!

I fiddled about with the B&W digital filters today and was most disappointed.

For example, if I selected a red filter the image was recorded as reddish. This isn't what happens on an SLR with B&W film.

I guess a Canon EOS 10D isn't an option then? You could reuse the lenses and other accessories from your SLR then.

How about trawling eBay for a used EOS D30? That's an awesome camera and almost criminally cheap on the s/h market these days.

Well, if that's your thing then fair enough - but you'd have to pry mine from my cold, dead fingers

I'm just referring to the fact that I paid £1800 for it less than 2 years ago, and it's now worth barely over £300 as a trade-in against the latest models. For that money there's no way I'd even consider upgrading, but there are always those who just have to have the latest and greatest model all the time; they're the same people who take their kit out of the bag once a week to polish it but never actually use it.

For what it's worth, you wouldn't want mine anyway. It's got nearly 20,000 frames on it and the controls are full of sand from the deserts of Arizona. Must get it serviced

Cool

Does the setting really matter that much when taking photos?

I have a 128mb memory card for the camera and can obviously get more shots onto the card with the 2MB setting than the 4MB setting.
For printing out piccies, is the 4MB setting the best option and why?

TIA.

Yes, 4MP is usually the best option for printing. If you only print pictures quite small - say, up to 6x4 - then 2MP might be OK. Above that, though, you'll get visibly much more detail and less blockiness if you use the 4MP option. Depending on how good the lens in your camera is, that should be good for prints up to about A4 size.

2MP is really for web use and small prints, but unless you're short of memory cards I'd be inclined to avoid it. Disc space is cheap.

If your printing out at sizes above 6'*4' then yes it does matter
I have an old eos 100 and a sony dsc p2 with 2 meg of pixels and althought the sony was bought for work stuff mainly
I am quite surprised at how good it is on its top resolution setting.

You may want to avail yourself of the web's best digitial photography forums.

Digital Photography Review Forums

There is a forum for each type/make of camera and the people there are extremely helpful.

Regards,

tiggers.

Again, thank you very much for the helpful replies.

I'll have a browse on that forum and consider upgrading to a better camera after I take my course and am happy that the pictures I am taking are worthwhile.

Talking

Here are some compressed versions of the photos I have recently taken at Kiama

The originals are in 4MB format and are huge. I have the last one as my wallpaper on the PC.
