russell, seriously mate, go down to a guitar/music shop and see what they've got.
gleen all the information of the drugged up scruffy condescending oiks that work there, then have a scout about the local papers, loot and ebay for something suitable, saving you £££'s

there are plenty for sale if you look about.
big makes are generally best (for repairs, spares etc)
the likes of Marshall, Roland, Peavey, Laney etc.....

also it will depend on whether you want to imitate yngwie J Malmstein(sp?) or george benson.

ie what music you want to play.
if its for home use, i would recommend a small valve amp, and some effects pedals or multieffects box.

happy shopping.

Talking

You need to get one that goes up to 11 - one louder than 10

Words of wisdom from beemerboy and unclebuck

Maybe have a scout about in some of the guitar forums too...
Harmony Central might be worth a look - it's got a forum dedicated to amps.

Can't go wrong with a Marshall of some description - relative value for money and a good range of sounds on the modern ones

I was thinking of a Marshall.

Mate of mine has a TSL something or other which he bought s/h and it seems to fit the bill.

Are you going to use the amp for live gigs, recording or home use.
I have just bought 2 Orange Crush 10 for playing in the house. They are connected to the stereo outs of my Digitech RP7 Processor.
They cost £59 each & are loud enough for home use.

Get a Fender Roc Pro, they're awsome

Although way too loud for the house. But let it rip & it sounds so sweet

Sweet! I might have to get one of those now

Just for home use so don't need too many watts.

More interested in sound quality/variety

Cool

If I may do a small suggestion: listen to/try out a Rivera R30/12.

30 watts RMS only, but *amazing* sounds.

I do have quite a few heavy/expensive amps <cough>, but for recording I almost always end up with the Rivera.

IIRC (has been a while) list price was about 500 UKP.

Importers for the UK are:

Chandler Guitars
300-302 Sandy Combe Road
Kew Richmond, Surrey, TW9 3NG
UK
tel: (44) 020 8940 5874
fax: (44) 020 8948 8203

Best to contact them to see which stores sell it at what price.

It's not a "volume" brand, so only a few (specialized) stores will carry it.

Alternatively, contact sales@rivera.com. I did as my amp came without the manual, and I got a reply a few hours later from Paul Rivera himself

This was the answer :-

hi, we probably could supply it, however we do not stock this particular
amp. the price would be £1195.00. the one i would recommend is the chubster
40, same price, in stock and quite a bit better sounding.

A little expensive for my needs I think..

I would go for a Marshall JCM2000 DSL as it sounds better than the TSL (IMHO). Go for a combo and make sure it has the 'deep' switch that emphasises bottom end frequency at low (home) volume. This makes a big difference.

TSL is more flexible but sound is more muddied due to 3 channels not 2.

I have owned a Plexi,JCM 800. several JCM 900's, silver jubilee and valvestate MArshalls and the JCM2000 is one of the best sounding I've owned and for lower volumes is probably THE best.

Have fun
