Question

There's a Blood Donor day on at my work today. I've never given blood before, should I? What's it like?

Its ok. I used to do years ago, but because I had to start on medication I couldn't do it any longer. You have your finger or thumb pricked to test iron content then its through to the room where you donate. You literally lie on a bed and have a needle inserted into the vein in your arm and then lie there until such time as the allotted amount has been collected.Used to be about a pint. You don't even have to look if you're squeamish about needles etc. When I used to go, they used to then give us a cuppa and let us have a sit down for a few mins , then we were happily on our way again and in the knowledge that because of giving up just a few minutes of our time, someone somewhere would benefit from our actions. Go on.... be a hero !

Go for it -- doesn't hurt, no after effects. Used to do it regularly in Denmark, cos they used to visit work AND gave you a free beer afterwards. Nice people

I've been giving ever since I split my head open in an accident, and lost about a pint and three quarters of blood. hospital told me that they thought about a transfusion.
when I got home, there was a card come through the post asking if I'd like to give blood. Made me laugh, I thought someone was trying to tell me something.
Im up to 40something donations now. Go for it.
Alcazar
PS: you get your blood tested free, and told if there's owt up every 4 months once you start.

my only hang up about giving blood is that some gangster who'd be shot and didnt deserve it would get it
or an asylum seeker
or illegal immigrant
or drug dealer

sorry, rambling here.......................

My only hang up is the people that do not do so.
Do give. You never know when you might need it your self plus, as mentioned, you will be notified if the checks bring up anything unusual for you.

Do it. If I can, anyone can.

If you find it painful you can ask for a local anaesthetic, although I have always managed fine without.

Just make sure you follow the guidelines and make sure you eat before the session.

Go for it! Don't eat right before the session, but keep your fluid levels high and don't go on an empty stomach. Round our way they bring along a bloodbus which takes a few people at a time. Saves them having to set up in some dingy canteen I suppose.

I've only gone a couple of times and first donated last year. I've had a serious needle phobia for decades, and giving blood has helped me to feel slightly better about the whole needle thing (though I'm certainly not 'cured.') It also makes you feel holier than thou when you wander round work for the rest of the day proudly sporting your plaster - wear short sleeves!

As stated before you can have a local beforehand. I did this for the first donation. Second time was *slightly* more painful without the needle, but certainly bearable. Just don't look!

Cheers
Joolz

...oh and no binges the night before please

Do it!!
You never know when you might need it yourself, and you'll be helping a load of people who really need it.
You won't be able to give if you've been to a malarial area within the last 12 months, or have unconventional sexual orientation.

Go for it, good for a laugh!

I always give blood when I can, the way I look at it I'd be quick enough to take it if I needed it, so it's really my duty to give a bit of my juice and time.

well remembered folks. must give the platlet centre a ring. i started off giving bllod a few years back, moved onto plasma but then because of the factor 8 scare they dont take it anymore. as my platlet count is through the roof,(i have blood like treacle) i give a double dose of platlets every 4 weeks. work even gives me time off to do it.

cheers

Used to give right through Uni (mostly Guinness came out of my veins though ) and for the first few years at work.

But I haven't given for a few years, due to excessive work, and other such pathetic excuses. Followed the link above (and then the link to the Scottish blood transfusion service and found there's a doner session not too far from us tomorrow. So I'll nip off and give 'em a pint, and get back into the habit.

I'm on the list of people who shouldn't give blood, plus I'm really squeamish when it comes to my own blood, however I'm a registered organ donor and I'm a registered bone marrow donor. I can give bone marrow but not blood? Crazy!

Under 8 stone? You should stop reading the Atkins diet thread.

They don't allow low-weight people to give blood because they're too weedy and might wilt if the amount of blood in them reduces by too much.

I am a B something group too and used to give blood regularly. I couldn't after having my two tattoos and since getting a nasty virus have been advised against it by my doctor till I am better.
As soon as I can give blood again I will.

tried it once because i felt guilty that i had never done it before....but i couldnt take it.

i have a phobia of needles but found out i have angel veins so the blood donor needles too big for my veins and its hurts like hell. Would have to have a local anesthetic before giving blood to numb the pain...and i aint prepared to go that far.

sorry to all who need my blood...but its gotta stay where it is.

i tried!!!

The new guidelines say that you cannot give blood if under a certain weight/height limit. My ex still does even tho she is 7 stone but usually runs in to the "are you giving to lose weight" question even tho she has given as much as her body weight over the years......
Do give if you wish to receive..............
