Was it 100% necessary to use the horn, ie to make that person aware of your presence, or did you sound it yourself purely as a "you idiot" gesture?

You been cutting people up again?
I do know what you mean tho. It happens far too often nowadays: someone does something dangerous, you hoot, they go spaz as if you've done wrong!
I say that we stop everyone driving except me and some of me mates!

ROAD RAGE
Seriously though - didn't get in a road rage war but thought - hang on a sec, you are the one that drove like an utter plank, why you mouthing off at me. Maybe they don't like being broken out of their own little Matrix............

Iain - **** off
Tel - yes mate, if I hadn't used my horn I would now be less 1 front wing Dual carriageway roundabout, me outside, her inside (in a volvo ) and she went straight across the roundabout using both "lanes" as if she was the only car on the road

It's purely a reaction to embarrassment, they know they have done wrong and would prefer nobody to remind them.
They'd probably prefer to say sorry actually but that is hard to do when you are feeling a pillock over making the mistake.
If the "victim" in every case didn't react then there would be no rage at all.
After all I know mistakes can be dangerous, costly, whatever but they are also not intentional, that's why they are called mistakes.

Avoidance = driving up onto the roundabout and into the posts indicating direction of the roundabout. I don't think so! As it was I braked (hard) in avoidance as she started cutting me up, however she would still have hit me had I not sounded the horn.
A good philosophy but in the real world it isn't going to work.
I don't see why I should have to drive my car up a roundabout and into a post or just let them drive into me when I can use the horn to avoid it.
Perhaps you should lobby the government and car makers then to remove horns from cars then if you believe they are clearly not required

ScoobyJawa- I note a little sarcasm, even a touch of anger.
The, I was there and you weren't, so there, attitude.
I wasn't commenting on your incident but I still stand by what I said.
Reading how your incident occurred I actually think you could have left out the horn and just concentrated on a skilful avoidance.
Just think, you'd have no reason to post about it too.
It wouldn't be good to be all the same though, would it?

Eh? WTF else are you going to do? It is possible to brake hard (avoidance) AND hit the horn! You use yer foot for the pedal and hand for the horn! The combination will hopefully mean that they don't hit you.
Don't forget, they were the ones showing a complete lack of driving ability!

Maybe i'm weird (well, we all knew that anyway), but i seriously cannot remember the last time i used my horn. Generally i reckon that by the time you've hit it, you've had time to take action to avoid the incident. It's only really useful when you're stationary as a sitting duck and somebody hasn't spotted you, like manouvering in carparks and so on. The majority of driving courses try and teach you to drive without using it, for the reasons displayed above - poeple don't like it, and it can lead to road rage incidents quite easily. Just my 2p worth.

But if you're hard on the brakes and they're still driving at ya.....
Plus, with this instance, if you didn't hoot they'd continue on their merry way and side-swipe someone at the next roundabout. Hopefully they will think about what happened and realise what they did wrong.
Nah, not gonna happen, is it?

No sarcasm or anger at all - takes more than someone not agreeing to get me angry Just making my points as you are.
But you are correct - you weren't there or know the location so you can't comment on my particular situation
I did everything I could to avoid - I had no where else to go without causing damage to the car so used the horn and avoided an accident. I'm sure the person in the car would have felt even more silly if I'd just let her hit me then pulled her over and taken her insurance details.........
However, its something I see more and more, with bad road manners, driving and lane discipline - not just when I am involved in an incident but when I see it happen to others.
BTW - by making your general points you are making a comment about my incident , and also telling me what I should have done without even knowing the location and the circumstances of events
And yes I would still have had reason to post about it, as the incident would still have happened, avoidence or not, horn or not, and its something as I've said I see more and more of.........
And no - it wouldn't be good to be all the same

Fair enough SJ - if the Volvo driver really did alter her course as a result of your horn sounding, and you had nowhere else to go, even by braking, accelerating or changing course, then coolio. It's just that in a lot of horn sounding incidents, it's just a "you're an idiot" replacement, unfortunately.
What did you mean by flashing safe overtaking? You mean on motorways when lorries help each other by letting the other driver know when he has cleared their vehicle and can safely pull back in front of them..?
No, you don't mean that do you. You mean people who don't like being overtaken and flash as if proving some moral point that you're going too fast? Yep, totally agree - *** behaviour.

Thats exactly what happened mate, to accelerate into her, brake and she would still have got me or hit a post, fortunately I got away with it - but was the whole thing of her having a go like it was my fault!!! LOL! I think you've hit the nail on the head though and I do agree that more often than not these days they are sounded just to say to someone you're an idiot and thats probably why you now get the reaction you do when you use it for what it was intended for, to let people know you are there.
Nah, re lorries - thats cool. Its the straight road, national speed limit, car in front doing 40 and you overtake. They then flash you or leave it held on because you've overtaken them LOL!
