New Invention Idea

never patented anything myself but know a man that has. Apparently its relatively straightforward to find out whether your idea is original and whether it is patentable. Not much help to you really but try the website.

LOL thats my chance of an easy million gone up in smoke
Assuming its a good idea that is! So without giving away the exact details of design etc can you tell us anything about it that wont jeapardise your wish to patent it but gives us an idea of what it is you have come up with?
Come on I don't like secrets!

Of course it a good idea? In that case it will have been patented by a bloke already!
You can't tell us any information on it? You have forgotten what it was haven't you! I bet its cheese related lol

what area of technology is it (e.g. electronics, computers, bio-tech, mechanical) ?
You then just want to talk to a patent firm. Let me know the area, and i can give you a few names.

If you look, you will find I have already given you the answers. Someone of my obviously superior intellect hides the clues behind a maelstrom of snippets of information, such that it would take an equal genius to discover the answer. Something which obviously, you are lacking.

Then you're on your own i'm afraid
Basically you need to talk to a patent law firm who will do a search (to see if your idea is in fact new), draft a patent spec and push it through the system.
The first step then is to find a firm to talk to. Most firms specialise in a certain area, so the people you'd want to talk to are different if you have an electronic / mechanical system than a bio-tech (for example).

I got plenty of stella already, must be cos I do lots of sulking
LOL I couldn't resist the chauvenist pig comment Was only joking obviously
I bow to your superior intelligence as I can not decipher your maelstrom of snippets - but then that goes for any female comment/conversation/snippet of information for any bloke, you only ever get half the story and are expected to understand what they are on about
I am only guessing its cheese related due to your addiction to the stuff
Seriously though good luck with whatever it is and if it makes you a millionaire'ess can you buy me a huge crate of stella please???
How about going on that TV show where its a competition to get the best idea patented and produced all for free etc??? If its still running that is. Was on the BBC IIRC. Even the ones who didn't win got contacted by companies I think because they had such good ideas for products.

Maybe based on the strength of feeling against the Lean Mean Grilling Machine maybe it's a Fat Nice Frying Machine?
Possibly a cheese frying machine?

> also mention that Patent searches can be quite expensive...
yep, about a grand, but (IMO worth doing if you're serious)
I think the main point about patents is that you've got to be very very clear what you are trying to achieve in the first place. Owning a patent on something is not an end in itself; you dont get return just because you hold a patent. It's got to be exploited, licenses, used in defense, etc before its actually any worth.

Yes and also be aware it doesnt stop any body ripping you off either, if they do you the patent gives you the upper hand but you still need a $hit load of cash to drag em thru court to prove your rights.

yes - but a far far more likely scenario is some form of licensing / cross licensing. The idea of patents "blocking" competitors is a bit out of date - no one wants to end up in court (on either side of the table) and the holder of the patent dosnt want people to design around their invention, thereby making the patent redundant.

Hi all,
two of us are running a patent (PCT, patent cooperation treaty) through at the moment our costs so far!!:-
For PCT filing £2200
For Norway £1606
Maintenance £310 (for norway)
Total £4116 These were last years costs
with have now got to nominate other states
ex for pct filing covering the EU £2500
USA £1000
other states add about a £1000 a time
And don't forget the maintaince fees every year.
we have to chose our designated states by july , so were looking at an expensive summer.
But our product does have cross licensing potental in several markets.
hope this helps

Blimey...maybe I won't patent it after all. Just let someone else think of it, go through all the hard work and then mutter into my cheese soup that "I thought of it first"...

I am sure I once read about a case where someone had posted their invention idea to themselves. And because the post mark and date was clearly visible, and the envelope was unopened, they succesfully defended themselves in court against someone who had marketed 'their' invention before them.
Could be worth considering.

Funny just covered this in my OU assignment. According to the book (OU) for an invention to be patentable it must be:
1.)Novel
2.)Original
3.)Capable of manufacture
Hope that helps
