Had the pleasure today of meeting him.
I dont realy like football!! But whata man. After all the news about his binging and his health...I hope to God I look as good as him at his age!!!!
He had young ladies who had NO idea who he was looking at him!!
The original David beckham...but with a better idea of a good lady!!
He was an absolute gent and a real charmer. It made my day!!

I have nothing really against the bloke - Im sure he is a nice guy. However, I do find it difficult to sing the chaps praises more than the average working man when hes had so much of the good stuff:
-Played world class football and got the fame
-Slept with hundreds of fit ladies
-Got paid a shedload at the time
-lives off his name now and will live of his fame forever (after about 20 years work)
-Led a wild life in his youth
And what did he do:
-Spent his money very badly
-became a down and out
-damn near killed himself through drink / drugs
-is lucky enough to afford top class treatment and lifestyle to get better.
At the end of the day, he has worked hard for nothing like the amount of years the average guy on the street has had to. He will die with more money than you or I will probably ever see and yet we still make him out to be a superman.
Personally I hope he enjoys his later life - but lets not blow this out of proportion - the guys who have fought and who have died protecting our country, and people who devote their lives to helping disadvantaged people should be getting more praise.
So in my opinion, a summary:
George Best - seems like a perfectly nice chap who has been lucky to enjoy things we will probably never see because he was a great football player for 20 years, and thats his working life done. Got things very wrong in his life but recovered.
Good luck to the guy, I have no problem with him and Im sure he is a top bloke - its just our worshipping him like a God that puzzles me.

Thats just it..... most dont know about all the work he does for childrens charities etc.
So what if he lived like that ..how many would have been able to keep it together at thet time ...with all the fame and money??
Also he had some bad friends......
But now he has respect for his life and that takes guts to find and keep.
Good luck to him

fair point, but imho, its blowing things out of proportion to compare him to arm forces who have died,i certainly didn't.Of course heroes deserve praise,as does Prince Charles for tireless charity work, but then again,i wouldn't call Charlie a sporting icon.
which is what i think Best is,a sporting icon, not a pillar of society to be compared to soldiers, just a simple sporting icon.
not having a go,you made a fair point,it can be annoying when wealthy people who fall off the rails are some how seen as wonderfully strong people.
Best wasn't just a good footballer though,he is in most fans top 3 players of all time

Thanks for not flaming me too much guys!
I know people dont really compare him to wartime heroes for example, but I always feel that hes getting worshipped a little too much when hes featured in every sunday magazine for the last year!
Its a fair point that he should be congratulated for sorting himself out - yes that took guts and I wouldnt like to think if I could save myself If I were in that position. Fair play to him.
With todays ridiculously overpaid footballers I think its worth giving Beckham a little praise - sure hes a fame seeker but hes settled down and gives generously to charity whilst not taking drugs and doesnt have a drink problem. Im sick of the media coverage though!!! By the way, Im not a Man U or a big Beckham fan!
After reading the replies to my post, perhaps its the media thats to blame for giving him this iconic status above other people.
Anyways, you are all right - he seems a genuinely nice guy so I have nothing really against him.

another slant on the tale -
I'm not into football (but that's other stories) so haven't really "followed" him for things he's done like that but my Mum's got cirrhosis (sp?) of the liver and it'll kill her probably in the next year or two . She's been told it's not an option having an operation due to potential pre- / during & post-op complications etc. with other things she has...
She's mentioned Mr. Best at her consultations (both at the local hospital and Jimmy's) and each surgeon has said that they wouldn't have carried out his op - it was self-inflicted and he should live with the consequences, however well-known he is... (My Mum's isn't drink related - unknown cause but not self inflicted)
He's lucky that he found a "co-operative" surgeon (however he's managed to have it done, money or not).
I'm not bitter about him but "some people are more equal than others" springs to mind.
I think my Mum reads articles about him if it's related to his condition but each one gets her depressed knowing what she does - effectively it brings her problems home to her that she's not going to get out of it alive...

I believe I read somewhere that Best did pay £60000 for the operation to be carried out privately.
Some people are more equal than others unfortunately especially when theres money involved.
Hope your mum can enjoy what time she has left.
Chip.

Thanks for that Chip
60 grand seems a bit high or are we getting celebrity surgeons like celebrity lawyers with lifestyles to support...
Apparently, there's money available and they do approx 120 - 150 transplants a year at Jimmy's in Leeds - you don't tend to expect that kind of throughput but I think it's the old problem of getting the donors in the first place...
