Are personal plates a bit naff now?
#1
Got a plate, had it years (A* OLY). Paid nothing for it, was good fun at first, but in reality havn't bothered with it for ages. I change my cars pretty frequently so its been on our old Transit for the last 7 years.
Another Olly has offered to buy it today. Don't know whether to hang on to it or not.
Keep or sell?
Tacky or not?

Guess it depends what the plate spells out really. I'd always like faniced the idea of my initials on a 'dateless' plate, just makes the car a bit more personal, especially when you take it from car to car.
One of the things over here (Canada) is that you can, for a very cheap price, have a proper custom plate, up to 8 digits. so none of that naughty mis-spacing of letters However, there are NOT that many custom plates over here, why? well, I'm not sure, I know for one most of the scooby boys don't have them as their cars, even standard ones, attract a lot of cop attention, so a custom plate would make it easier to harass someone (not that they would of course!). I have pondered with the idea of a plate over here, but I can't think of a good one at the moment.

If it means something to you then fine...if not..punt it.
Depends how personal it is to you i suppose ?
But if you change your vehicles often like me..turns out to be an expensive extra !

Bin the plate they are naff BUT Rik's problem with picnic table size spoilers worries me. I like em! I always have a particular problem with the Nova/Saxo mob with an individual plate - couldn't see why you wouldn't just flog the plate and buy a better motor?

Typical response here then, not my personal view.
cherished numbers are naff.
Interpreted to read:
But they wouldn't be if I could afford a good one.

They can be cool, but only if they cost a lot, like Y4, A9 etc.
At the other end of the scale they can be very naff, for example
X5 xxx on an X5  or
PT C100L on a PT Cruiser

Obviously yes, take a look at the kind of people that tend to have them- the D list celebs mentioned so far are hardly an inspiring bunch are they?

What has money got to do with it?- I could afford to waste X thousands of pounds on a plate if I really wanted to- however I prefer to exercise good taste.

well said that man. it's like wearing designer clothes and making sure they have B I G logos, like everyone must know you paid top dollar. it's far more classy to be reserved and understated.

So boasting about disposable income is in good taste now? I'll have to upgrade my copy of Debrett's.

lol- I'd hardly call that boasting.
I can afford to fill the Impreza up with fuel- what next "ooh hark at Lord Muck with his tank of Optimax"?
I was just making the point that a lot of people choose not to have them for the same reason they don't wear Rolex's and £10 shirts with £200 logo's on them.

LOL as I've said before being a lad from a council estate I'm about as far as you could get from being a toff.
Seems to me the people with the hang ups about money are those that wasted their hard earned on a vanity plate.

I find my plate a bit naff now. I bought it from the DVLA on the release date so it's not quite in the Paul Daniels league.
On the positive side, buying it was a fun experience, constantly hitting redial to beat the brokers. Choosing whatever you like, for whatever reason was a laugh, good excuse to get the dictionary out. Five letters are better than Seven. It's a talking point.
If I bought a new car I'd most likley do it again.
Y NOT.

I've just brought 2 plates for me and the missus, from DVLA £250 each, nothing flash just our initials, mines ends DJK hers ends EJK and the 3 digits at the front are the same aswell.
Ideal 18th b/day pressie for your kids.
If ur going to buy a plate with initials on it goto DVLA website as they charge £250 this includes VAT and £80 DOT fee, all others charge £250 + VAT + £80 DOT fee
