I hate the stuff, but a lad in the office eats it every day of the week.

Sure it must be bad for you

It's actually very good for you. Like carrots help you see more in the dark, tuna helps you breathe under water. If the odour from his sarnies gets too much - suggest he tries out my theory.

Too much ANYTHING is bad for you! (otherwise it wouldn't be 'too much'! too much water is bad for you, too much air is bad for you )

There's a guy upstairs from me that works on this. He says that while there's no doubt that oily fish is anti-inflammatory and therefore good for your heart, these effects are negated in anything high up in the food chain as they tend to concentrate mercury. Best thing, he says, is small stuff like white bait or anchovies (ie, low down in the chain).

If you're wondering what he thinks is the worst thing in todays diets is, it's crisps - he goes nuts if he sees anyone with a bag! Mmmmm.... all those healthy aldehydes!

Lovely stuff.

I eat about a can per day. Just pop the can open, drain the water and I'm in.

mercury, my ****

excellent stuff, very healthy and the steaks are delicious.

we can all theorise about why stuff might be mad for you (I suspect all the lard butts in the Atkins thread aren't doing themselves any favours, for example) but if it tastes good, go for it

if it smells bad, mind, chances are you won't like the taste

Although nearly all fish contain trace amounts of methyl mercury, the levels for most fish range from less than .01 ppm to .5ppm. However, certain types of fish should be eaten in moderation because mercury levels in those fish sometimes exceed the stated mercury guideline. The fish with the highest mercury levels are larger fish such as sharks, swordfish and very large tuna, typically sold as fresh steaks or sushi (not canned). Due to the higher level of mercury in these species consumers have been advised by the FDA and Health Canada to limit their consumption to one serving a week (Note that this restriction does not apply to canned tuna.)

Unhappy

This is of concern to me as my son has recently been diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy which is a form of kidney disease that could develop into renal failure. He has regularly eaten tinned Tuna for most of his life and one of the questions that I was asked at Guys Hospital was if I had ever worked with heavy metals or chemicals. The thought that what we believed to be a healthy source of nutrition could be a cause of his condition is devastating as we have always taken great care in the food that we give our children.
Although I will say this does fly in the face of what I have researched about eating oily fish when you have IGA Nephropathy as it is supposed to act as an anti inflammatory.

IGA Nephropathy is where the Kidneys become microscopically inflamed and produce excessive amounts of Protein and haematoma (blood) in the urine, due to the immune system attacking the Kidneys when you get an infection.

Does anyone know how I would go about getting the Mercury levels of tinned Tuna checked, but saying that the experts all say that there is no known cause of IGA yet, which is incidentally the biggest form of Kidney disease.
You may all laugh but I had even considered doing a "Lorenzo's oil" and trying to find a cure myself. But faced with the prospect of having to first study to become a Dr whilst being hindered with my level of intelligence, let alone the daunting hard research that would be needed into a cure for the disease, I was soon awoken out of my romantic notion. Maybe stem cell research will be the saviour we need, but the social, moral and religious implications this kind of medical research has, may mean that it is never done at a level to benefit anyone
We are still waiting on some results from the Kidney biopsy he had performed a while ago, but these can take upto 6 months to come back. I just hope it is not hereditary as that would mean that my other child stands a good chance of developing it as well Sorry for going on but there is not much we can do but hope everything will be OK, and you know what they say about hope, you have 2 chances, Bob Hope and No hope
