Mp3 Players
#1
Madame would like an Mp3 player for her birthday. Any recommendations?
This is top of my list at the moment.... don't want to spend more than £200.
How big is an mp3 file (normal compression?) 126kbytes? If this player has an 256mB driver does that mean it can hold 2000 tracks???? I find that a little hard to believe TBH.
Cheers...

A typical mp3 file will be about 5meg (or 1meg per minute roughly) at 126/192 bitrate.
I got a sony mp3 diskman for about £100 a year ago. good quality and can play normal cd's too. A CD will house about 150 songs. To me, a better bet than a normal mp3 player.
Or how about a jukebox? slightly larger than a cigarette pack and can have a 20GB hdd which is enough for your entire music collection with ease. they were £300 a year ago so I guess a bit less now.

yeh the only prob with the one you've suggested is that it will need the tracks refreshed regularly since the most you'll fit on will be about 50 singles worth - maybe 4 albums. Not bad but is does become a pain putting new ones on every other night.
A cd mp3 player such as the discman suggested above is a good idea since blank discs are so cheap you can fill em up with abandon. As long as you don't mind carrying discs around...
The other point very much in favour of the cd option is the battery life - some of the latest players manage about 80 hours - about 4 times what you'd get from a solid state player like the one you are considering, and around 10 times what a jukebox, or harddrive based player would manage.
Personally I've got an Archos JBM020 which is a jukebox (20 gig) mp3 player that can also record both mp3 and video (mp4) as well as playing back dvd rips and Mpegs etc
It was around 300 bucks last year and I cant really fault it but its battery life is poor (8 hours tops). On the flipside - I currently have about 500 music tracks and 4 feature length movies on it...which is nice
It really depends on the sort of usage your ladyfriend will require of it as to which of the above is the best bet.
Hope some of that helps?

Have a look at NetMD players. Like an MP3 player, but with removable media. Get about 2.5 hours music on each minidisc, and they're tiny things, could hold about 15hrs in your pocket..
